2024 was an interesting and challenging year for #sustainability professionals. But 2025 could be even more challenging, due to a confluence of political, social, and economic forces. Companies' pullback of previous targets — on carbon, plastics and other issues — could accelerate as mid-decade milestones are missed and Republicans feel emboldened by their anti-woke campaigns. So, how are sustainability professionals feeling? More than 650 of you responded to my recent LinkedIn #survey. Turns out y'all are a pretty optimistic bunch, though some significant portion say you are stressed or burned out. Either way, brace yourself for another challenging year. Joel, you bring up a lot of critical points (as always) and I see this moment as an opportunity to pivot the conversation a little. With the current political climate, we have a chance to elevate the sustainability movement into one rooted in regeneration—a focus on restoring and supporting life in all its forms. The right often claims to be ‘pro-life,’ so why not challenge them to align with that ethos by embracing regeneration? It’s not just about sustaining what we have but creating systems that nurture and renew. This could be the bridge we need to turn resistance into collaboration and move the needle forward. I think this approach would stop them in their tracks and they would have no argument against it. There is nothing “woke” about development in support of life ;).

Perhaps this is the moment to get real about where we are and what we need to do next Joel ? It’s not about holding on to optimism for the sake of it; it’s about using the weight of these challenges to drive real, tangible action. How do we take this energy—frustration, hope, exhaustion—and turn it into momentum for 2025?

If sustainability folk aren’t an optimistic lot, as a whole, I think we’d have larger concerns. Perhaps the pessimists and disillusioned should become funeral home directors and capitalize on their solemn state. If it weren’t a challenging year we’d all be home in our pajamas!!! Those who do the work know it is hard - and if it doesn’t feel hard, they aren’t working hard enough. This work also requires courage. And the opposite of courage is not cowardice, it is conformity. Even a dead fish can go with the flow. This work is about swimming upstream against the general current. It is also about spawning, and like salmon, it requires one good hop after another - in a brutal fight. Perhaps the field was too crowded and filled with floaters, not good determined swimmers. To be clear, I would have liked to see different results politically and philosophically across the nation. That didn’t happen but I am no dead fish nor will I ever go with the flow. I’m swimming and paddling and hopping with more determination than ever. And while I don’t dispute the results and data from 650 folks, I see a different reality and new determination! This is year for opportunity / good trouble / true impact. All in baby. Or stay home

Fusing Sustainability with Business

Thanks for this, Joel. Sustainability professionals are at the front lines of a very difficult transformation of our world, and it can be challenging on deep and personal levels. I have been inspired to see the growth in this field over my last 20+ years in it, and have taken heart in the arrival of energetic and passionate peers; there is not only strength in numbers, but also personal support in that community. I would like to lend one of my guiding principles - gleaned from none other than Winston Churchill: "Never give in. Never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy." This charge is not easy, but I can promise everyone that it is, in fact, worth it.

The physics of climate change does not alter based on which person lives in the mansion at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue -- or leads in any other hall of power. The sense of urgency to address our need for a healthy, stable environment will continue to be on the minds of the public in every region and the national media as floods, fires, hurricanes, and droughts come through -- with greater frequency and force. No matter what your political leanings, so much of sustainability is simply common sense and good business, and that's one strong case for optimism.

Thanks for this perspective on us in this moment Joel Makower. It's help to have this snapshot of the landscape (or at least part of it) and of our mood. I'm heartened that only 8% of your respondents are contemplating giving up or giving in, and that most of us are taking a deep breath and girding our loins for the challenging times ahead. (It's not "optimism [which] truly stands out" for me, Gilles Mautin. It's commitment.) We'll be exploring some of these matters on our monthly Living Between Worlds "conversation for possibility" just one hour from now (12pm PST).
