Relocate, or leave. Our values show up in the hard decisions. This week, Patagonia gave CX employees 72 hours to decide if they would uplift their lives and move or lose their jobs. Their reason? Culture building is hard. The motive is good. They want to build a better culture, and that is easier when everyone can meet together. Their execution was (in my opinion) flawed. They may be getting a generous severance package (good), but having just three days to make that decision is unjust (bad). I think it conflicts with their core value of justice: "Be just, equitable, and antiracist as a company and in our community." These are the hard decisions we have to make as leaders. Their brands are strong because their cultures are strong. Patagonia. WD40. Warby Parker. REI. They operate on a higher wavelength— Living their values, internally and externally.
