I’ve had so many conversations with artists who struggle with creating content and maintaining consistency on social media. I have to admit, when an artist is more social media-friendly, it definitely makes life easier, BUT making great content isn't the only path to success. I've noticed an interesting approach: if you're not really into creating content, focus on making a lot of music. If you're slower at releasing music, invest time in creating more content. I've seen success both ways. In the end, it’s all about staying visible with something. To all the artists out there struggling with content: if it feels like too much, shift your focus to making great music instead. What can musicians teach us about creating content? Over the weekend I listened to some more interviews with Billy Corgan. One of the things aha moments for me when he responded to a question if / how touring affects songwriting. He said touring musicians tend to start writing songs about them doing the touring, gigs, being away from home. And that of course, this only resonates maybe with other touring musicians, not so much though with other fans. For me this was an aha moment. We create content here on LinkedIn. We are in a sense like those musicians on tour. Many of us, instead of sharing stories from life, business, expertise (education), start to post about creating content about creating content for this platform, and how hard/easy/rewarding or not it can be. But our community could not care less. No one cares about it really. Why? About 80% if not more folks on LinkedIn never posted a single post, maybe exept for “celebrate I got a new rat race at a new company”, or “look, I’m great, I got certificate such and such”. They would not go any further than that, some of them for not seeing & understanding why, large group of them being closely watched by their organizations and their absurd social media policies. Look, building a community is great. Building your personal brand is great too. Reading 1 million posts about it from guru-juiced pumped up posts and comments is at best boring, at worst annoying. My takeaway? Less post, comments and spammed feed about “how to sell & succeed on LinkedIn” and "How to create one year of cracing great content for LinkedIn in less than 7 seconds using AI” and share what really makes you tick. Your own topics, real life experience > algo-fueled optimized posts.

This will change how you think about your content… Music has always been a big part of my life. When I was in high school, I took every music class my school offered. I remember during my chorus class, my music teacher would always say “Sing with emotion” She would say that when you are performing, the audience will feel whatever emotion you project onto them. “Use your voice, sing with emotion, and make the audience feel the song” Well…. It’s the same thing with your content. When you’re marketing your business, you want your target audience to feel something and connect with your message. This is why it’s so important to understand their challenges and desires. So when you create content, your words make your audience connect with your message emotionally, and they will stop to listen. How do you use social media as a music artist or creative? What are some things you consider that drives you to post more on certain platforms than others? A few factors that influence me to compartmentalize my content amongst different social media platforms are it’s vibe, the culture and how it’s structured, sometimes the aesthetic along with a plethora of other reasons. Due to different traits and characteristics of each platform, I personally don’t think it’s always appropriate to translate/and or repost the same content everywhere but that’s just me.
