Calculating Dairy Methane Emissions Reductions!! The California Air Resources Board (CARB) held a public workshop in late August about CARB’s progress in compiling California-specific dairy activity data and evaluating the dairy sector emissions trends. “Community advocates and residents have raised concerns about the impacts of dairies and dairy digesters on adjacent communities through both public comments and through rulemaking petitions submitted to CARB,” explained the Board in its workshop announcement. “In CARB’s most recent petition response, staff committed to continuing to evaluate the dairy sector based on the best available data and to host this workshop on dairy sector data. To better understand these concerns and emissions trends in the State’s dairy sector, CARB staff utilized data sources from federal, state, and local agencies to develop the California Dairy and Livestock Database (CADD). The database contains facility-level cattle population and digester information for California dairies from 2012 to 2022. CADD is based on publicly accessible documents and improves CARB’s ability to track the California dairy and livestock sector trends.” https://lnkd.in/gPcHZV69

Cow Methane Emission Reduction Strategies Expanding....... Summary: Frank Mitloehner, an air-quality specialist and professor at the University of California-Davis, anticipates that strategies to reduce cattle methane emissions, including feed additives, will greatly expand over the next five years. Why it matters: Lower methane-producing animals can contribute to reduced greenhouse emissions from the livestock sector. Dig Deeper: A 2022 FAO publication explored different livestock methane mitigation strategies including improved health, breeding, feed efficiency, and more. Important news! 🚨 Bovaer available for use on U.S. dairies to reduce methane! To meet our climate goals, reducing enteric methane emissions is essential. This solution offers farmers an effective means to achieve this. Although there are still considerations to address in bringing these products to farms, we are excited to see another valuable solution added to the toolkit for minimizing livestock’s environmental impact. It’s been a long process to see a feed additive make it to farm with a claim to reduce methane. Bovaer is the first FDA-reviewed feed ingredient with a methane-reduction claim. 🐄 Feeding one tablespoon of Bovaer per lactating dairy cow per day can reduce methane emissions ~30 percent by suppressing methane-producing enzyme in cow's rumen. 📚 More than 70 peer-reviewed studies and 100 on-farm trials in 20 countries. We will study it in the CLEAR Center over a full lactation. 💲 Opportunity for diversified income stream through carbon marketplace. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gqqRfxQd

One of the largest reductions in global greenhouse gas, actionable *today*, with increased profits for farmers and *zero* intrusive legislation or costs for those farmers -- that's what DCVC-backed CH4Global delivers.
Imagine a world where the simple act of feeding cattle could help combat climate change. That's the vision that drives our work at CH4Global, where we've developed a revolutionary seaweed-based feed additive that can slash methane emissions from cattle by up to 90% without changing their diet. Our product is already being used by farmers abroad, but a regulatory snag is preventing us from bringing this climate solution to the United States, home to one of the world's largest cattle populations. Fortunately, the bipartisan Innovative FEED Act would create a new FDA approval pathway for feed additives like ours, accelerating the adoption of game-changing innovations that benefit the environment, animal health, and producer profitability. It's a win-win-win, but time is running out. In my latest op-ed, published in Feedstuffs, I argue that Congress must act swiftly to pass the Innovative FEED Act and empower American cattle farmers to lead the charge in reducing methane emissions. Read the op-ed at the link below ⬇️ to learn more, and leave a comment to let me know what you think. And if you'd like to get involved in the fight for a more sustainable and globally competitive U.S. cattle industry, you can call on your elected representatives in Washington to support the Innovative FEED Act by visiting https://lnkd.in/eWiSWxiJ https://lnkd.in/exmpuVmz #methanereduction #agtech #climateaction #innovativefeedact #farmerprofitability #livestock #sustainability

🚨Greenwash alert!🚨Are feed additives a silver bullet to livestock emissions? No. Great article explains why: 1) Most are untested, 2) Those that are more tested reduce methane only 10-30% in cattle (important to note that cattle don't just emit methane, so that's a far lower % reduction of total emissions, 3) Feed additives very difficult to administer to most grazed cattle, because they need to be fed at least once/twice per day in mixed with concentrate feeds, 4) there are considerable cost and logistical barriers to many farmers adopting them. In conclusion, feed additives "are unlikely to play more than a minor supporting role. Worse, they could be used as a smokescreen, distracting and delaying us from the fundamental need to reduce food loss and waste and shift some diets away from such heavy consumption of ruminant protein." #food #meat #plantbased #lessandbettermeat #climatechange #climatecrisis #biglivestock #defundbiglivestock

The rigorous science of Asparagopsis to safely and effectively reduce methane emissions from cattle has been around for a long time. One of the greatest barriers to widespread adoption is the extremely lengthy regulatory approval processes in regions such as the USA. CH4Global CEO Steve Meller has written an OpEd to urge the US Congress to expedite passage of the bipartisan Innovative FEED Act. "Livestock farmers and feedlots are eager for cost-effective tools to shrink their emissions footprint and stay competitive as major beef and dairy buyers set ambitious climate targets. By passing this bill, Congress can give them access to the solutions they need, without sacrificing a shred of productivity or profitability. It’s a win-win for farmers, innovators, consumers, and the planet. To the members of Congress holding this legislation’s fate in their hands, I have one message: Seize this moment. The EPA's methane math is unforgiving. Our planetary clock is ticking." #innovativeFEEDact #methane #globalwarming #ch4

As global regulations evolve, data-driven solutions are becoming essential for poultry farmers to meet environmental standards. In England, a new legislation from January 2025 will mandate farmers to report nitrogen and phosphorus excretion, aiming to curb pollution. These standards, based on the European Commission’s 2017 BAT guidelines, emphasize accurate emission monitoring to ensure compliance. We are already embracing similar data-driven practices here in Uganda. At River Poultry, we aim to equip even poultry farmers in Uganda and across Africa with the tools needed to monitor and manage not only waste outputs effectively but also use data-driven approaches to eliminate excessive veterinary drugs from the chicken supply chain starting at the farm level. This proactive strategy aligns with the increasing demand for sustainable farming practices globally, as highlighted by industry reports on environmental standards. Furthermore, by utilizing data-driven methods, River Poultry, we are not only helping farmers to minimize their environmental impact but also enhancing their productivity and profitability. As consumers and regulators increasingly prioritize sustainability, being ahead of the curve with data-driven practices positions our farmers in Uganda’s poultry industry as responsible and competitive players in the global market. For more insights into the regulations and the importance of data in agriculture, you can refer to the detailed article linked below.
