NTT DATA Global Industries continues Global Marketing &Communication continues the journey with World Economic Forum. We participated in the WEF workshop ‘Building Resilient Cities 2024’ 17th July, in Tokyo. This workshop was held in Japan as part of the G20 Global Smart Cities Alliance , an initiative under the Center for Urban Transformation. It brought together government officials, academia, and experts. We are contributing to the Japan initiatives for global challenges with many thought leaders on how we can leverage the change drivers like automated driving technology, data coordination, and bridging the digital divide by connectivity. 🌏 By the end of 2030, APAC countries will be on both ends of the global 5G spectrum (pardon the pun). On one end, developed 5G markets in the region are set to lead globally, with an average of 93% of total connections being 5G. The story differs for the rest of the region, where 5G adoption will average around 40%. This contrast highlights the varying pace of technological advancement and infrastructure development within APAC. Interestingly, Thailand and India have made remarkable progress, moving closer to being key players in the region. What sets the 5G leaders apart from followers? 1️⃣ Spectrum roadmaps: They help governments forecast future trends and manage their resources. For mobile operators, roadmaps provide the certainty needed to invest based on future allocation, renewal plans, and management of spectrum. Effective 5G rollouts depend on decisions prioritising capacity, coverage, and affordability. 2️⃣ Spectrum pricing: High spectrum prices hinder the rollout of 5G, especially in rural areas. Countries adopting lower spectrum prices and larger spectrum allocations see benefits like higher population coverage, better download speeds, and increased service adoption. 3️⃣ Spectrum licensing: Robust licensing approaches prioritising mobile broadband services above revenue maximisation are crucial. Optimal auction design and license conditions help 5G flourish, ensuring it has the greatest impact on economic growth. Avoiding artificial spectrum scarcity and adopting sharing approaches like leasing can support successful public 5G services. 4️⃣ Investment in network deployment: 5G is capital-intensive. Policymakers, operators, and ecosystem players must establish the necessary building blocks for efficient 5G network deployment and a sustainable business case. This includes ensuring adequate 5G spectrum availability and upgrading existing networks for future rollout. On the road to 2030, the journey of 5G adoption in APAC will be a tale of two spectra - one of rapid advancement and another of gradual evolution.
