🚇 As I sit on the metro, reading One + One = Three by Dave Trott on my way to the RAeS Heathrow Branch lecture “Grandma Flew Spitfires - A Forgotten Story of Skill, Courage, and Sacrifice” at British Airways HQ, a fascinating thought crossed my mind. The introduction of the book ends with this eye-opening conclusion: “Under the old system 1 + 1 = 2. Under the new system 1 + 1 = 3.” Just last Tuesday, at IBM Think 2024, I had a thought-provoking conversation with leadership from NatWest Bank. They’re already leveraging GenAI to boost productivity, but there’s this feeling that they haven’t quite unlocked the true game-changing potential yet. This got me thinking… What could these transformative GenAI features be? Sure, we have amazing capabilities now—like chatting with your banking app to easily transfer money for your daughter’s birthday party. But that’s still the Old World, where 1 + 1 = 2, just wrapped in new GenAI clothing. The real GenAI, where 1 + 1 = 3, would look something like this: You ask the bank app to transfer the right amount for your daughter’s birthday, and it doesn’t just follow a basic command. Instead, it calculates what she needs based on her friends’ spending trends, your family budget, and even a bit of predictive insight to guess the perfect amount. That’s a new world where GenAI goes beyond answering questions—it anticipates your needs. ⚡️ What do you think? When sitting in a discussion around “How is AI set up to revolutionise banking and fintech” two things stood out.. 1 - when a show of hands was raised on “who is beyond trial phase of AI at your company” barely anyone raised their hands.. not many companies are really using new technology as much as they could or say they are.. 2 - “2023 was a test phase, 2024 is the year of activation!” Meaning, this is the time for companies to truly adopt AI and new technology or risk falling behind!
