Last week, NGESO opened an industry consultation on the proposed changes to the way renewable energy projects apply for, and receive, grid connection offers.   As a fully vertically integrated renewables company with more than a gigawatt of solar and BESS projects in the pipeline, we welcome this much-needed reform and agree with many of the core proposals. However, we feel that the proposals favour transmission-scale projects, while not sufficiently addressing the process of getting connected for distribution projects.   There are already many distribution-scale renewable projects ready to connect, which will certainly be needed for the country to hit our Net Zero targets.   To hear more on our thoughts, see the link below. In this moment of profound challenges dictated by the #EnergyTransition as well as changing regulatory frameworks, it is very important for #TransmissionSystemOperators (TSO) to study and apply the correct policies for the renewal of strategic assets. Last Saturday, my wife, two friends, and I had the unique opportunity to visit a TenneT substation equipped with a #phase_shifting_transformer (#PST). A big thanks to Ghazal, Mohammadhossein, and also TenneT for this amazing experience! #PSTs play a crucial role in modern transmission grids, especially with a high penetration of #renewable_energy_sources (#RES). #PSTs are able to dynamically control the power flow, relieve congestion, and prevent overloads, thus ensuring grid #stability and #efficiency. The #NOVA principle (Netz-Optimierungs-Vorsorge-Analyse), which is always considered in Germany, focuses on proactive grid #optimization and #preventive_measures. The use of #PSTs is perfectly aligned with the #NOVA principle as they enable real-time adjustments and predictive management of power flows by providing #flexibility to compensate the fluctuations of RES generation. This proactive approach reduces the need for costly infrastructure upgrades and increases the overall #resilience and flexibility of the power systems.

EPSA President and CEO Todd Snitchler stated: “EPSA is a staunch supporter of the benefits of competitive markets; however, no economic model or structure can overcome inefficiencies in the interconnection process that can significantly delay critical investment in new dispatchable generation.
