Hero Group Acquires Deliciously Ella, Paving the Way for Global Expansion Swiss food giant, Hero Group, has acquired Deliciously Ella, the leading UK-based plant-based food brand, in a move that will allow the company to expand its reach in the vegan snacking market. The acquisition comes as plant-based eating continues to gain traction worldwide, with consumers opting for healthier food choices. Founded in 2016 by Ella Mills, Deliciously Ella has become a household name for those seeking nutritious plant-based options, with its products sold in over 10,000 stores across the UK and Europe. Founders Ella and her husband Matthew Mills, who have remained majority shareholders, will stay with the company under Hero’s ownership, leading Deliciously Ella through its next phase of growth "We are incredibly excited to partner with the Hero Group. What started as a small recipe website and a cookbook has become something bigger than either of us could have imagined. Hero has a proven track record in helping brands reach much greater scale. This is a transformational moment in bringing our natural, plant-based ranges to more people, both in the UK and abroad”, said the Mills couple in a joint statement. The acquisition also includes the factory near Milton Keynes, which was purchased to bring production in-house, streamlining its supply chain. However, the deal does not include the Plants by Deliciously Ella brand, which offers pantry staples like pasta, sauces, kombucha, and soups, or the Plants by DE restaurant in London, which will remain under the Mills’ ownership. For Hero Group, the acquisition is a strategic expansion into the UK’s vegan snacking sector, complementing its existing presence in the country through its Organix Brands Ltd - A BCorp Company, which focuses on organic food and snacks for babies and children. "Deliciously Ella is a perfect fit for us", said Hero Group CEO Rob Versloot "Our multi-year strategy has focused on bringing brands that align with our mission to offer natural, healthy food to consumers, and we are particularly happy to have them on board”. For Deliciously Ella, the Hero acquisition is a significant milestone and marks a new chapter for the brand, as it prepares for international expansion and greater reach. As Versloot highlighted, "This is a transformational moment for both Hero Group and Deliciously Ella, as we work together to bring healthy, plant-based options to consumers across the globe”.

Raja launches ‘Nim’s…Naturally’ to capitalise on growing product range 🍎📈 One of the UK’s leading food disruptors has a new name after it announced it has passed the 65-product milestone. ‘Nim’s…Naturally’ has been registered by entrepreneur Nimisha Raja MBE to reflect the company’s growing range of products that have diversified from air-dried fruit and vegetable crisps to incorporate drink garnishes, botanicals, ingredients and edible teas. This has seen the Sittingbourne-based business become the driving force in healthy products across several categories, all made using just one ingredient - a fact that has played a significant part in its year-on-year growth. The company, which employs 18 people at its BRC-accredited factory, is also now preparing to launch a range of air-dried ingredients under its Let’s Cook and Let’s Bake brands. “When we started it was all about our air-dried fruit crisps and that was reflected in our original identity,” explained Nimisha Raja, who launched the business in 2017. Is the frozen food aisle FINALLY getting its fair share of innovation? 🧊 Whilst consumers have been inundated in recent years with innovation in almost every category, frozen has gone largely untouched. That is, until now. A few recent announcements are proving there is a huge, and so far untapped, opportunity for challenger brands. First, we had CRAVE expanding into frozen for the first time with their gluten, milk and egg-free frozen doughnuts. Then there was the news of Iceland Foods’s first accelerator programme for challenge brands, "Brands on Ice," helping them to develop products to be sold exclusively in their stores. And now, Youtubers The Sidemen have launched a frozen range exclusively with Iceland, bringing 15 products to stores which include sauces, chicken wings, BBQ ribs and a selection of side dishes, that are inspired by dishes from the Sides chain of restaurants. The Sidemen already have a growing presence in UK grocery - recently partnering with Mornflake Mighty Oats to launch a cereal brand “Best Cereal”, followed soon after by the launch of a meat snack range with New World Foods Ltd. But this launch shows that with an engaged customer base, proof of success in other categories and a compelling brand narrative, retailers are able to bring innovation into their stores. Why is frozen such an exciting opportunity? 👉 It’s dominated by retailer own-label: 73% of sales are driven by the retailer’s own products, so brands have a tough task to break through. 👉 Brands in frozen are growing by only 1% in value and -4% in volume. I’m looking forward to seeing how the range performs and the impact on the frozen category as a whole. Looking for the opportunity outside of your core category can be scary for challenger brands – but it doesn’t have to be. If you want to confidently explore a move into a new category, North Star can help you make an informed decision with a clear action plan. Drop me a DM to chat! ( 📸 @icelandfoods on Instagram)

In Europe, Germany is the biggest market for plant-based foods, with the UK following behind as second. In Germany, where we have widespread distribution of our retail products with the Edeka Group, sales of plant-based foods have grown year-on-year – up by 42% since 2020. There’s generally a wider acceptance and willingness to try plant-based foods, which wasn’t the case when I started LikeMeat in 2013. There are more players and diversity of offerings in the market today. TiNDLE is not the only company making plant-based foods, so we do have the challenge of educating consumers about our products and what makes them different. While we’ve always focused on R&D and product innovation, we are also doing so now with a lens on home cooks and the retail experience. TiNDLE Foods recently made a move into plant-based milk... The acquisition of Mwah! last year allowed us to incorporate their dairy technology platform and capabilities, which will serve as a basis for future dairy foods. The platform will allow us to create gelato in the future, but for now, we’re focused on the development of our barista milk product. Our current focus is widening the reach of our current products, which includes the complete TiNDLE Chicken range (for both foodservice and retail) and TiNDLE Bratwursts (in Germany), and continued development of our dairy products. GQ: What do you feel is missing in the plant-based industry right now? TR: We’re missing the taste factor and culinary experience on the consumer side in the plant-based industry right now. Food is meant to be enjoyed and is behind so many of life’s greatest moments. We see that a lot of the backlash against the industry hits on that point, and particularly on taste – we feel that’s somewhat accurate when it comes to the overall experience consumers are getting from start to finish when trying a new plant-based product. What we also need to see are more products that bridge great taste and experience with great nutrition and clean labels. It’s important to have taste together with short, clean recipes that are also nutritious for the consumer. We’re seeing a move in this direction, but it needs to be coupled with what we mentioned earlier on taste/culinary experience. GQ: As a CEO, how do you view the sales declines of plant-based meat over the last couple of years? The dips... show that there isn’t a lack of interest, but rather that demand was not as strong as our optimistic projections thought it would be. Consumers are still buying plant-based meats, and what we’ve seen specifically in our category of chicken is that there’s an appetite for new products and brands.
