In a critical election year, radical-right parties are gaining ground across Europe. At @Carnegie Europe, we unpacked their rise and the potential impact on EU foreign policy through 14 country case studies. A few highlights from our new report 👇 🔷 Demands from radical-right parties to leave the EU or the eurozone have mostly been abandoned. Now, many push for a "European alliance of nations" organized along intergovernmental lines and insist on the primacy of national law over EU law. 🔷 At the European level, radical-right parties remain divided. Competing national interests and divergences on issues like Russia and China hinder the creation of a united front and reduce overall impact. 🔷 But where these parties do converge, such as on migration and climate change, they will likely find support from mainstream parties and be able to influence EU policies. Topics on which the EU decides by a majority vote will be harder to influence than those where unanimity is required. 🔷 While radical-right parties show little interest in foreign policy, they excel in framing debates in polarizing and securitized terms. They influence EU foreign policy by pressuring mainstream actors, blocking consensus building, aligning with external powers, and via other means. 🔷 The dominance of radical-right parties at the EU level would further complicate efforts to implement a values-based foreign policy. The union would lose credibility as a promoter of fundamental values, receive criticism for hypocrisy, and become a weaker international actor. 🔷 Mainstream parties hold the primary responsibility for containing the radical right. Doing so will require defending core EU values, resisting the urge to emulate the radical right, and actively engaging in dialogue with all parties that are democratic to shape EU policies. Doe je ook mee? zie het bericht hieronder: Until 9 October we can sign a European Citizens' Initiative to #TaxTheRich. 👏👏👏 The initiative can be signed by EU nationals. It currently has a total of 236.047 signatures. Threshold: To be successful, a European citizens' initiative has to reach one million statements of support as well as minimum thresholds in at least 7 countries. Currently only France has passed the threshold (French people should still sign though, because of the first requirement). I wonder if we can push this through our respective channels (think: friends, families, organisations, schools, unis, movements, etc). I think we should tax the rich. You, too? Let's goooo! ✌️🥳✊” https://lnkd.in/edBkARMq

Always like the takes of EUMS .. Especially this one ;-) it'll be a tough challenge to get treaty change to make the EU more present on the world stage while keeping it's member states' identity intact... Deeper integration is required on some topics, on other topics I believe we could leave it to the member states. If not this 'swiss-style' federation, maybe something else.. Definitely worth it to keep dreaming of a more unified and conflict-free Europe. Whatever it will be, a treaty change is required because as long as the VETO ruling stays, we won't budge much.
Could a Swiss-Style EU Be the Future?

Exciting news this morning: https://lnkd.in/eCpUBpEG But I have to confess, a European citizen at heart and member of the generation that enjoys all the freedom EU membership brings, I am still a little biased. I hope the positive the EU brings will overweigh other deep changes. So: Cestitam! ajmo zagrliti tu divnu, fascinantnu zemlju!
