Shortly after my grandfather died, I started spending time in his study. One book I picked up had a handwritten note in it that simply said, "If you aim at nothing you'll hit it every time." I later came to find out this quote is attributed to Zig Zigler. This simple quote illuminates why having a scorecard and measurables are so important in our enterprises. I encourage every enterprise I work with to have 5-15 measurables that get reviewed weekly in the leadership team meeting. Eventually, we want everyone in the organization to have a number. Yes, everyone. These measures tell us when we're winning. Or when we're losing. They are the mirror to let us know what needs to be course corrected. Over time we learn what the inputs, what lead measures, are needed to get predictable results. And once we know which lead measures move the needle, we simply do more of those activities every week to get predictable results.
