You would be surprised, we sure were! At Wine In A Million our membership grows because people want someone to drink wine with - without any judgement! Yep it's that simple. Niche communities are blossoming into powerful ecosystems where like-minded folks can just hangout together. My go-to community building approach would be Value-Driven Memberships REAL VALUE is the name of the game. Try building small first. Think smaller, close-knit groups within bigger networks. - Offer exclusive, well-researched & curated content, - Design personalised experiences - Introduce a concept or an idea to go with their current interest Members want to feel like they’re getting something truly special for being part of the club. So, how can businesses leverage this? 1. offer personalized value, 2. leveraging tech for better insights 3. and focus on member well-being. Most importantly, charge for this curated facilitation and use that money to experiment & improve the offerings. Stay adaptable and always look for ways to enhance the member experience. About last night: 110 months in a row with Rebel Book Club 📚 Every month we crowdsource a theme, curate three non-fiction books and our community votes on which one they’d like to read together. Last night we skipped the first half of the England game (didn’t miss much 👀) to dive into The Myth of Normal by Gabor Maté, complete with a Maté tea cocktail thanks to longtime member and all round legend Julian who is the force behind Lemonaid & ChariTea. Three takeaways: • My quote of the night - “We suffer more in imagination than reality” - our interpretation or perception of a challenge or problem is often far bigger than what it actually takes to crack it. • If you want to grow a community there is something magically simple about doing something on the same day every month. Ben Keene and I have run meetups on the last Tuesday of every month for 9 years now - our people expect it, it’s always in our diary and so it happens. There is no backup plan. • What we define as ‘normal’ is constantly evolving. We ran out of ice very quickly last night and unsurprisingly in this heatwave every supermarket nearby was completely sold out. It took 8 minutes using Deliveroo for a man to turn up on a bike with three big bags of ice. That’s totally normal now but would have been mindblowing when we had our first meetup back in 2015 😂 What our ‘normal’ looks like in 5 years is going to be dramatically different. Be ready. Two asks: • We launched in Manchester last night with Omar at the helm - if you know any thinkers or doers who would love RBC please do let them know we’ve landed in 0161! • We are always looking for interesting drinks brands and venues to partner with - we bring the crowd, engaged marketing channels and good vibes. HMU if you’d like any more info :) Onto July - we're reading Around The World in 80 Trains by Monisha Rajesh - come join us!

Why Pretending Holds Your Community Back 🚫 It’s tempting to keep everything polished and perfect—but people crave authenticity. Let them see the raw moments that make you human. Behind-the-Scenes (BTS) content gives your community a real look at who you are and what makes your community unique. 💡 Here’s the truth: when you show up as yourself, not as a persona, you build genuine connections. Take your members behind the scenes—invite them to see the challenges, the passion, and the unfiltered journey. When they see you, not just your posts, they’ll feel a deeper connection. 🤝 Imagine sharing a “Day-in-the-Life” clip where you walk your members through your morning routine, that first cup of coffee ☕, or the quiet moments before a busy day. Show them a real challenge—an unexpected setback, the nerve-wracking call with a vendor 📞, or an honest moment of feeling overwhelmed but pushing through. These moments don’t make you weak; they make you relatable and memorable. Want to try it? Start with short videos or snapshots capturing authentic moments from your day. Share your creative process—let them in on your brainstorming, your dreams 💭, and the ideas that keep you inspired. Take it further with live Q&A sessions where they can ask questions and connect with you in real time. 📹 When you let them in on these “unpolished” parts, your community feels closer. They become insiders who want to share, comment, and support someone who’s just like them. Here’s your challenge: don’t hold back. Show your audience the early starts, the highs, the lows. Show them what it’s really like to lead a community. 🌟 Ready to bring your community to life? Let them see behind the curtain, and watch how they respond. 👀 What’s one real moment you’d share? Ever had a friend who wouldn’t stop raving about a new restaurant? That’s the kind of friend your business needs. When you build a community, you’re not just gaining customers; you're creating a network of brand advocates. These folks will sing your praises louder than your mum at your graduation. They’ll recommend your products to friends, share your posts, and defend your honor in the comment sections. Essentially, they do your marketing for you – and they do it with genuine enthusiasm. So, treat your community members like VIPs. Give them exclusive deals, sneak peeks, and a reason to keep talking about you. Advocates are powerful, but what about the long game? Well, next week I’ll be sharing the final snippet on sustainable growth through community building. Have you followed this 4 part series on community? When you’re running a C-level community, you want to make an impact – obviously. You want people to join, but you also want people to keep coming back. You want them to renew in your chapter. That's where the secret sauce is. That's where the real gold mine is. You want to design every single interaction with the utmost care and concern from your members’ perspective. And when I say design every interaction... … from the venue that you choose, to the speaker that you bring in, to the takeaway items that you give people, to the follow-up that you do after like emailing or surveys, even just the refreshments that you offer... Everything has an impact on your potential members. What you don’t want to do? → Leave people unengaged between events. Whether it's an email, an ad, or sharing a resource, you need to be doing a little bit of nurture activity before you get to your next event. You want to treat every interaction, before, during, and after, as an impacting moment. Make sure that it's highly curated to the best of what the customer would want and meets their needs to experience the transformation that they're there to receive. This means that you need to be designing your chapter carefully and thoughtfully and not slapping it together. Do not throw an event for the sake of an event. Thoughts? Let me know in the comments. #businesscommunity #clevelcommunity #entreprenurialcommunity

I recently came across a unique approach to networking and community building. David organizes lunch gatherings at local restaurants with one special rule - every attendee agrees to tip $100. "I pick a local restaurant and anyone that wants to come must agree to tip $100. The servers are usually blown away and everyone gets to meet some fun people in my network." Why this concept resonates with me: 1. It Creates Memorable Experiences. The unexpected generosity creates what marketing expert Clay Hebert calls a "portable story" - something people naturally want to share and discuss. 2. It Makes a Real Impact. When multiple professionals each contribute a $100 tip, it becomes a significant gesture that can truly brighten someone's day and demonstrate the power of collective generosity. 3. It Builds Meaningful Connections. The shared experience of giving creates a unique bond among attendees. The $100 commitment also naturally attracts people who are serious about both networking and making a positive impact. This approach elegantly combines relationship-building, local business support, and acts of kindness into one meaningful activity. I'm curious: How would you adapt or enhance this concept? What innovative ways have you found to combine networking with giving back to your community? Thanks to Ankesh for sharing! #CommunityBuilding #networking
