I like numbers, and there is one set of figures I like to track each month - the federal budget. In the year to October 2024 the surplus was $9.75 billion, down from a peak of $31.5 billion in the 12 months to March this year. A quick fall from record levels. No wonder there is so much speculation of a March 2025 election, which would push out the budget to the usual time in May. The Mid-Year budget report next month will also be interesting to watch.

📣 Happy Budget Day! 📣 Of course, today’s #Budget will bring forward hard choices and will be difficult across a number of areas. So whilst there’s understandable pessimism, a few of us are also genuinely excited - 🆕 This is first Budget of a new Government and especially of a new Labour Party (UK) Government. Those don’t come round often. 🧰 That also means this is an opportunity to frame the country and its economy from a different political perspective. 🗺️ For a long time Budgets have been about managing situations, and arguably managing decline, so today’s Budget is the start of a project to grab and shape the country’s direction, growth and future. 🙌 🛠️There are so many parts of the state and the economy that need not just money but also reform, and not just tinkering. Cat nip for policy wonks. 😉 And, importantly, the budget is the start of all of this and not the final word. There’s been a long wait for today’s Budget but it opens up the road to so much more: Next year’s Spending Review, the next steps on the Government’s Missions, there’s lots more to come.

What will the Budget bring? With the Budget coming on 30th October, speculation is increasing on what changes will be announced. The Chancellor and the Prime Minister have made comments to indicate that the Budget will bring difficult decisions. The Chancellor reported shortly after taking office that there was a £22bn black hole in public spending inherited from the previous government. The BBC reported last week that their sources indicated that actually £40bn is needed to avoid real-terms cuts to departments. There has also been much talk about driving growth in the UK economy, with the International Investment Summit recently aiming to attract investment to the UK. Will Employers’ NI increase?
