Great to attend Cadent Gas Limited's vulnerability conference yesterday and see, not only the extensive work delivered by Cadent's teams and partners, but the broad agreement around the need for continued and expanded support. #Socialvalue, #fuelpoverty, and #energyefficiency have been some of the core, focal points of my career so far, so it's always exciting to see it being held as a priority by the company heating nearly half of the UK's homes. A few of the key takeaways from the day: 1) Akshay Kaul talking to the role of utilities around vulnerability: "In an ideal world, policy and taxation would manage vulnerability. In the real, nuanced world, regulated utilities have the opportunity and position to diagnose and respond to vulnerability, directly in people's homes." 2) Mark Belmega highlighting why GDNs have such an essential role in this area, with the statistic that Cadent enters more homes daily in the UK than any other organisation, without selling a product. 3) Steve Fraser, when talking about Cadent's performance since he joined the company, stating that his colleagues are "very good at squeezing the pound" - multiplying the money received from Ofgem and shareholders into the maximum impact possible. From my past experience working with Philip Burrows and the team, I couldn't agree more. 4) And finally a point that came up during one of the morning panels: Can Cadent play a role "crowding in" other private investment? Is there a role for the organisation to encourage other corporates to follow Cadent in with funding, de-risking investments for less mature operators? I think Cadent and other networks could squeeze their pounds even further by formalising and encouraging this effort.
