Friday 5 "out there" content marketing idea #1: The Wallabies. The next RWC is in 2027. Here's how I would re-write their entire marketing and content strategy: 1. Hold a press conference and apologies to Rugby fans for letting the game down 2. Reveal a new jersey imprinted with the years they last held the Bledisloe Cup and RWC. 2002 and 1999 respectively. 3. Find new commentators who aren't ex Wallabies, and who actually might be in their graduating year of Highschool who can bring new energy and perspective to this current and next generation of the sport (and fans) 4. Announce that together with their new sponsors, that they will not be creating any ads. Certainly none that have them leg pressing some form of petroleoum oil because their legs...look...sweaty (oily?). This will generate the same if not more value in earned media. 5. Instead, pledge marketing sponsor funds to document their quest to once again attain the #1 Rugby team in the world status. This in turn will generate more long-term brand value for both the Wallabies and their sponsors. I've lost count at how many times I've said "this can't get any worse", so while I can't predict where the bottom is for the Wallabies, I can only predict how to atleast align their brand promise with authentic storytelling, and critically with a future flag in the sand that will rally their last remaining fans towards achieving it.
