Spotlight on attention! OTs call it a client factor. SLPs call it a cognitive-communication skill. Regardless of your discipline-specific vocabulary, attention is an important component of #cognitivefunction. Attention skills allow us to stay in our lane while driving, to alternate between looking at information on an insurance card and filling out a medical form, and to filter out background noise when completing a task. With several different subtypes - sustained, divided, selective, and alternating - attention is complex, and may seem overwhelming to assess. But if during observation or assessment of ADL, you notice that your client has difficulties that seem to be related to attention, you can corroborate your findings with the BCAT®. The Controversy Surrounding ACESO’s ALIP Scheme Imagine you have an LIC policy, and (god forbid), you met with any financial crisis where you have no other option but to discontinue your LIC Policy. But here you’re told you can continue the policy and reap the financial returns by assigning it to a company like ACESO. Sounds too good to be true? That’s the idea behind ACESO's ALIP scheme, offering policyholders more than LIC’s surrender value while promising continued life insurance coverage. But LIC is not pleased. They’ve come out swinging, labelling this practice as "policy trading"—something they argue goes against the Insurance Act, 1938, section 38(2), as amended in 2015. We sat down with MDRT member Joshua Ketchie, CPA, CFP, to talk about his journey through the profession, the role MDRT has played in it and his advice for new advisors. Check out our discussion below. ⬇ ❓What’s your best piece of advice to an advisor struggling to gain traction in the profession? “Create value with clients, and once delivered, ask them who else in their life deserves that type of value. Do a deep dive into your value proposition to make sure you’re delivering your end of the bargain.” ❓What do you think advisors should be paying attention to going forward in order to best serve their clients? “Listen, listen, listen. We all have ideas on what we think they should want, but if you take the time to genuinely connect with people, both client and advisor will be happier.” ❓What’s one piece of advice you wish someone told you at the start of your career? “Be patient but persistent. I think I tried to push too hard early in my career, and it’s harmed some of those initial client relationships 10 years later.” ❓What challenges did you face along your journey to MDRT? “Not enough clients, not enough income. If you weren't aware, I have set up a network within ACP-UK for practitioner psychologists working in independent practice. It is really starting to get traction now so I just thought I would let you know what we are working on: 👉 A regular peer support space for discussing clinical work and business aspects of independent practice 👉 Regular CPD on topics that are not easily accessible for those working in independent practice e.g. finance, safeguarding, innovative practice 👉 Strategic work such as the use of the Consultant title in independent practice and work around the thorny issue of insurance providers If you are an ACP-UK member, it is completely free to join as many networks as you wish and to access all these resources. While ACP-UK was set up to meet the needs of clinical psychologists, other types of practitioner psychologists are welcome to join as an associate. And with associate membership you get membership of one of the networks. The finance webinar, in which we will have an accountant talking about all the usual questions raised by independent practitioners such as whether to set up as a sole trader or a limited company, what we can claim through expenses etc., is planned for Thursday 17th October so you might want to consider joining ACP-UK and the network before this date!
