As AI reshapes societies, often unchecked and unregulated, we see it worsening existing inequalities and harming marginalised communities. Which is why Luminate is proud, together with the AI Collaborative and MacArthur Foundation, to be seed-funding the groundbreaking AI Accountability Lab with overall grant funding of nearly $1.5 million. Officially launched last night, the Lab will be housed at ADAPT Centre at Trinity College Dublin. Founded by world-leading AI scientist Dr. Abeba Birhane, the Lab will play a crucial role in holding tech companies accountable by conducting research across the entire AI pipeline, paying particular attention to the rights and perspectives of marginalised people and groups across Africa and Europe. The Lab will focus on action and impact: Dr. Birhane and her team will produce groundbreaking research and evidence to inform policy in Europe and Africa, and influence global governance discussions. In this way, the Lab will equip policymakers, activists, and communities with tools to advocate for equitable AI. The AI Accountability Lab embodies Luminate’s mission of ensuring the design, development, and use of technology respects and enhances human rights and social justice. Congratulations to Dr. Birhane and her team for such an exciting step forward in tech accountability.
