When was the last time you allowed yourself to think about work?
Actually zooming out - taking a breath above the swirling everyday demands of your to-do list, short term goals, how you’ll make ends meet - and reflect on just how much things have changed in the last few years?
I thought I thought about work a lot. I sit and write some mornings, ordering my thoughts on the page, thinking about the day of work ahead. I draw a weekly ‘map’ to see my bigger goals. We schedule quarterly one to ones with the team, to make space for reflection, and see emerging rhythms. I read books about work. Listen to podcasts about work. It therefore makes sense I was attracted to a set of free online workshops promising to explore the world of work (especially as they are run by long trusted friends and colleagues).
I have been delighted to find in these ‘Curious People’ sessions a new approach. A gentle and thoughtful space, putting ourselves as people back at the heart of the conversation, and alongside others. Hosted by The Curiosity Society, they make this look easy. Seemingly simple themes and questions actually carry great weight and meaning. For example during last Thursday’s session we were encouraged to share what we want to do more of. Such a simple question, but one I’ve not be able to think about for a long, long time. Supported to pinpoint that sweet spot of what we are well placed to develop, what we want to develop, and then to name it, we then cheered each other on to get stuck in.
And so here I am, having a go. I unexpectedly found I would quite like to write more and share thoughts on my own learnings and experiences. This post might not be perfect, but it is done, and my thanks go to the Curious People.
The next session, on September 12th, is about “Working with other people”.
See you there?
P.S. If you’ve got this far and you have any recommendations on books, podcasts or other content about work, I’d love to hear them…
The last few years have seen the 💼 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑙𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑟𝑎𝑝𝑖𝑑𝑙𝑦 💼 for many of us. We were, of course, ridiculously curious about this and wanted to explore the impact this can have on our personal and organisational lives.
The upcoming series of 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 is open to everyone who wants to change, improve and reflect on how we can make work work for everyone. Please join us and share with anyone you think would benefit from a little bit of time to meet new people and spend some time ON your work rather than IN it.
