I started my 2-year term as the NSW Vice Chair of the ACS (Australian Computer Society) in 2024, and it is a volunteer role. Why do I volunteer on a board? For many reasons, including: ✅ Professional development: Serving on a nonprofit board is an excellent way to hone various skills, including leadership, strategic planning, communication, and teamwork. You gain valuable experience in governance, decision-making, and problem-solving, which are highly transferable and sought-after skills. ✅ Networking opportunities: Board service expands your professional network, connecting you with like-minded individuals and influential leaders in various fields. These connections can lead to new friendships, mentorship opportunities, and professional collaborations. ✅ Enhanced visibility and reputation: Volunteering on a board can significantly elevate your profile within the community and industry. It positions you as a dedicated and engaged leader, enhancing your professional reputation and credibility. ✅ Community impact and personal fulfilment: Volunteering on a board allows you to drive initiatives that address local needs and promote positive change. This strengthens the community and provides a deep sense of personal fulfilment and purpose. I am on the ACS board to drive change and create career pathways for women in STEM.
