WordPress has released 2 new performance plugins this week! 1. Auto-sizes for Lazy-loaded Images Lazy-loading is a performance enhancement technique designed to improve webpage loading times by delaying the retrieval of non-essential images. It prioritises loading images essential for displaying the visible portion of the webpage, deferring the loading of others until the user scrolls and they become necessary. The purpose of this plugin is to seamlessly incorporate a novel HTML attribute for lazy loading called "sizes="auto"," which automatically sets the "sizes" attribute to "auto" for images loaded lazily via 'srcset.' This enhancement accelerates the retrieval of images required as users scroll down the page. It's important to note that the "sizes="auto"" attribute is part of the HTML responsive images specification, although it isn't exclusively associated with lazy-loading. Instead, it works in conjunction with 'srcset' to provide the browser with the necessary image size dimensions for various viewport sizes, enabling the browser to select the most suitable image source from the 'srcset.' 2. Speculation Rules The Speculation Rules plugin utilises the Speculation Rules API to fetch the content of webpages that are anticipated to be requested by the user. Essentially, this plugin predicts a user's intent to access a particular page and initiates the pre-rendering of that webpage even before the user clicks on a link. WordPress tests out their performance improvements in new plugins before they integrate it into future WordPress updates.
