Here is a marketing tip that I have found incredibly beneficial. Market, Market, Market yourself. In the book “High Income Consulting" by the late Tom Lambert, the author had the following to say: "The so - called window of opportunity is open only briefly as an organisation's priorities change. When a potential client recognises the need for services which you supply, yours must be the name they know. Your marketing, therefore, must be CONSISTENT and INDIRECT, aimed specifically at making you well known to ALL your prospective clients". To be a recognised name means that you have to find methods that will work for you in the long term and in the short term, using vehicles ranging from public speaking engagements to suitable audiences to being listed in directories. The lesson is clear. You should find ways and means to ensure that yours are the name customers remember when that window of opportunity arises. I am going to stick to the theme of differentiation in this post. An article from Hinge talking about specialisation triggered my thoughts here. If you don't know who Hinge are then I think they're well worth signing up to www.hingemarketing.com  The point I want to reinforce is how small and medium sized professional services firms really penetrate a market. Doing things differently is one clear way of differentiating yourself from the competition. I've been saying for many years there's not very much that's genuinely new and therefore that's a very difficult differentiator to explain. Organisations keep saying “we are innovative”. My challenge to you would be “prove it”. How is your innovation substantially different to what other people are doing? I'm not saying it isn't different but I think sometimes in professional services we kid ourselves about how different we really are. So, let's talk about specialisation; even if you take some of the really big consulting firms be they in accounting, consulting, law, or IT they will often have specialist groups who target particular markets. Medium sized and smaller firms too often try to be everything to everyone and in our view that just does not work. Perhaps a Big 4 firm has credibility across a wide range of sectors but for smaller firms saying you can do everything for everyone just does not hold water. My message is specialise. Pick a sector; really build your credibility in that sector. Spend time understanding the challenges and opportunities the sector has and have an opinion on what to do about them and express that opinion. The easiest way is through LinkedIn but also let's not forget some of the more old fashioned approaches about actually talking to clients, attending conferences etc. And if you are in professional services and you need some support; talk to us. We have worked in the sector for many years producing results such as adding £45 million to the top line of one firm.
