Not too long ago I had my first “Is this AI or “real” art?” comment, and I've been thinking a lot about it since. A few of the talks at OFFF ‘24 touched on the subject, and to be honest I was feeling pretty scared about where we're heading, but I came from the talks feeling way more positive about it all. One point that was raised was the fact that it’s leading to imagery that’s recycled, homogenised, and doesn’t stand out. When everything ends up looking the same, there will be a need for the taste, skill and expression of creative people. I was going to title this piece "Fear the Machine" but after OFFF, I slapped a "Don't" in front of it. That said, I still have a lot of thoughts that I want to get off my chest. Let's get into it... — It does not “democratise art” or “make art more accessible”. Art has always been accessible. If you have a pen and paper, you have access to it. And in situations where it isn't accessible, THAT is where the effort in tech development should be. Like drawing and design tools adapted for those who cannot physically use existing tools. — It puts people's livelihoods at risk. Corporations don't care about people, so if they can save money by replacing people with machine generated mush, they'll do it. — It's theft. Most of these generators take the work of creators without consent, break it down into data, and form images based on that data. Just because that work is obfuscated into non-human-readable data, doesn't magically make it ok. It's stolen data. End of. — Combine image generators with machine models that generate text, video, replicate voices, etc. and you have a nightmare of propaganda, fake news, and the abuse of the marginalised and the vulnerable. — To end on a more positive note, my hope is that the sea of machine generated images will highlight the real value of human-made art, and maybe, with the right rules in place, this tech could do some good. #humanmadeart #noai #artbyhumans #madebyhumans
