🎶 BBB has been featured in the Spring 2024 issue of @CoastMagazineAustralia! 😊 Dr. Anita Collins has written a brand new feature article titled 'There's more to learning music than sheer joy: it also makes happy and strong brains!' In the article, Anita writes that 'One of the most remarkable things about learning music is its impact on our brains. Research consistently shows that children who study music do better overall at school. Not only does music education stimulate brain areas related to reading, language and emotional intelligence, but it helps develop better memory, attention and even math skills.' This thought-provoking piece by Peter Houston at Media Voices, The Tortured Analogy Department (https://lnkd.in/eYb74_iM), is well worth reading. Indeed, the irony of this title should not be lost on publishers, many of whom are struggling to achieve sufficient engagement that converts into a profit. That said, exploring the evolution of vinyl and potential parallels with magazines should offer hope to an ailing industry. After all, disruption, followed by adaption and innovation, are the drivers of success. So, if publishers can extract key elements by analysing how the record industry brings innovation to their vinyl strategy, it could be a game-changer and drive revenue. I have long thought that magazines will follow a similar path to vinyl. Many are collectors and love beautifully packaged, thoughtfully produced work. Hence, fans are willing to pay £50 for Taylor Swift's carefully crafted and packaged vinyl album. As music lovers have reembraced vinyl, magazine audiences could do the same with print. We know readers love their magazine editions in a multitude of formats, but there is something extraordinary about a well-crafted printed magazine with carefully curated content and exquisite photography. And, at the end of a long, hard day on my devices, I know which edition I would prefer.

Bruce Springsteen, the pending election and deindustrialization in the Midwest https://lnkd.in/gHKhfUi4 So, I am interviewed in this article on Bruce Springsteen, as someone who is also a son of Freehold (though not actually born there as the article states). The piece is by a new Midwestern non-profit media outlet Midstory, with a focus on stories out of the Midwest at a time when more journalism focus needs to be done on the middle of this country with media shrinking overall and increasingly run out of only NYC, LA and DC. It looks at the issues of Springsteen’s rise as a working-class hero, while the actual working class fell into freefall with massive deindustrialization, especially as I point out in this with NAFTA which was horrifically destructive to the working class in the Midwest leading to many of the problems we have now politically. As the working class collapsed, Bruce did increasingly make more money singing about them, one of the disconnects brought out in this piece by the young journalist Xander Constantine – and I talk about how many of us who are journalists and academics have no understanding of these issues – one, because as journalists, we are often only in these big cities, and as academics, even when we are in the Midwest, we are in these wealthy blue-bubble college towns isolated from reality and the problems of the states we are in – in 2016, for me that was Ann Arbor, Michigan, when I was trying to point this out to editors in New York at one of the major dailies I usually write for, one of whom actually called me “nuts” for thinking Donald Trump would actually win anything, that’s how much NYC did not understand the Midwest - and now in 2024 in West Lafayette, Indiana, even if decidedly less blue a place. I think in the prelude to the elections, what are we not understanding about how much destructive economic policies that leave people behind are impacting the turmoil we are in, even if for many of us, the economy does seem very rosy under Biden? Let me know your thoughts on this, with November soon upon us.
