Want better decision making (for yourself, your team, or your organization)? Try “Yes, And.” Why? Because of one simple reason: Collaboration. Saying "Yes, And" isn’t just about agreement—it's about building on the ideas presented by others. It’s about exploring and digging deeper into ideas you don’t initially agree with. It’s about being open to new starting points, which inevitably lead to new ending points. When you start with “yes, and,” you give yourself (or your team or organization) more options, new directions, and interesting ideas you would not have thought of before. Also, by “yes, anding” diverse viewpoints, you open your awareness to potential pitfalls and limitations to the idea you thought was “so brilliant.” Finally, using “yes, and” now paves the road for smoother decision making and implementation later, as you’ll face reduced resistance when people feel their ideas are being heard and valued, and they will be willing to participate again in future decision making processes. So, what is Leadership actually? If you type the word “Leadership” into Google today, you’re going to get somewhere in the region of 6.4 billion results. If you narrow the search to “Leadership books”, it reduces to a mere 3.5 billion results. Some of the more exotically questionable titles include two of my personal favourites : “The art of Executive juggling - work, life, and chainsaws” …and … “Leadership lessons from my Cat: Unleash your inner feline in the Boardroom.” If my old Latin teacher was still alive today, he would have three words for these: Reductio ad absurdum. Like many aspects of life today, Leadership itself has been trivialised to a point of almost frothy irrelevance. So - rather than remain submerged in infodemic overload – what (instead) is a simple, practical, accurate description of what Leadership is and is not today, and how do I act upon it? 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 💡 Would you like to be considered a ‘Thought Leader’? Perhaps you are wondering why a peer/competitor or someone you admire has people coming to them as a recognised source, and you are unsure what makes them different. At a very high level there are a few key factors that true Thought Leaders have at their disposal: 1️⃣ Expertise  2️⃣ Ideas 3️⃣ Team 4️⃣ Deliverables 5️⃣ Recognition The first two are obvious. You need expertise in an area to generate the ideas that will separate you. Most people think they should be seen as thought leaders if they have the first two. WRONG! One ingredient ties the next three things together and underpins your ability to succeed consistently. If what you have is solely reliant on you, well, you have a challenge on your hands because growth and scaling require you to have a team, to deliver. You want your team to be consistent in what they do so what you deliver can be consistent. You need to capture the expertise of your team so what you have is repeatable even when a team member is away or moves on you grow and bring new people in. I interviewed John Tonkin from Brain in a Box (who is a Thought Leader) for my Biz Bites podcast about achieving consistency in your business. You need to be in control of your messaging and regularly deliver it to a growing audience.
