Last week we gathered for Medtronic’s holiday program, which in my view is the best event of the year. We take time to hear from patients whose lives have been impacted by our therapies, reminding all of us why the work we do is so important and fueling us to push to do more. I have never made it through a holiday program with dry eyes and this year was no exception. It also took on special meaning as one of the patients was my personal friend Shamir Khan, Ph.D. Made even more special by the fact that he received a device that I support. His story is one of the many reasons why I am so proud and grateful to work at Medtronic. #MedtronicEmployee #MedtronicProud
Thank you to Medtronic for inviting me to be one of the patients (along with Mr. Meng, Jessika, Mikk, Naomi, and Mani) who spoke at the 2024 Employee Holiday Celebration. Without my Medtronic Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) device, I would not be functioning at this point. I was incredibly fortunate to tour the Medtronic Energy and Component Center (MECC) and met with many of the 115 employees who actually worked on my specific device (through the serial number)!!!!! MECC manufactures batteries, capacitors, and leads that are used in many Medtronic devices. If interested, here's a link to my speech to employees: https://bit.ly/4gi9S36 “In 2018, at age 44, my world turned upside down with an early-onset Parkinson's diagnosis….. Tortured by secondary insomnia, there were nights, often at 4am, when I sat alone in darkness, overwhelmed by fear and sorrow, wondering how we would navigate this uncharted territory. Thinking about my wife bearing the weight of both her mother’s and my Parkinson's was devastating. Imaging my sons witnessing my slow decline was unbearable. I began to wonder if this was the life I was destined to live— trapped, not just in a body that no longer listened to me, but in a body that now actively defied and rebelled against me….” In this speech, I also announced the creation of the Shamir Khan, Ph.D. ‘96 & Malini Moorthy (“Khan-Moorthy”) Neuroscience Research Fellowship Endowed Fund that will support student research opportunities on and off campus on neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's Disease, at my alma mater, Haverford College. Finally, through renting our home to host photo and video shoots, we raised $60,000 (40+ shoots) for The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research @parisianpenthouse on Instagram (#Shootsforparkinsons) Shoots for Parkinson's Final Review Video (10:12 minutes; watch on “Full Screen” option): https://lnkd.in/eWATeX_e Thank you!!
