Biomarker testing looks at genes, proteins, and other molecules and then profiles a cancerous tumor. Within the context of breast cancer, biomarkers help doctors detect the tumor, understand the aggressiveness of the cancer, and customize targeted treatments towards those specific cancerous cells. The results of biomarker testing can often help determine prognosis and treatment plan and if the breast cancer recurs, biomarkers should be retested because they can change.
