Councillor Sam Karnib has been elected to Council this term and is a Labor councillor representing the North Ward as part of our 2024-2028 Council. Councillor Karnib says "We need to ensure transparency and improvement for the city of Liverpool and its residents. My goal over the next four years is to ensure this transparency for the ratepayer, so they are aware of what's happening in Liverpool and ensuring we are not left behind in terms of infrastructure.” Liverpool’s future as Australia’s next global city is bright and full of opportunity and our newly elected Mayor and Councillors are energised to help us deliver on this vision. In 2021, Sadiq Khan launched his bid for re-election with a pledge to build 40,000 council homes by the end of the decade, an average of approximately 7,300 a year. But, with around 325,000 households on London local authority waiting lists, that pledge is, quite frankly an insult, lacking in ambition and conscience, to every single citizen of our nation’s once great capital. As the most popular independent candidate in the upcoming London Mayor election, I believe that the mayor’s position is untenable. He boasts about building 7,300 local authority homes a year and yet, by his own figures, this means it would take 44 years to clear the backlog in London, and even that relies on demand for such housing remaining stable. He has had eight years in which to revamp the capital’s housing provision and yet seems content to gaslight voters with a housing policy which, at its heart, could see Londoners die while they wait for a home. In the upcoming Mayor of London ballot, I believe that voters want a real choice. An alternative candidate who has ambitious plans to address London’s lack of affordable housing. By pledging to build 50,000 modular homes by the end of the year, on Transport for London land that has been identified across the capital. The lack of social housing is a pressing issue across London. For example, in Wandsworth the council warns that, unless you are placed in one of the top two priority queues for a property, it is “very unlikely to be in a position to offer you a property”. And in Hammersmith and Fulham, the council says the situation has gotten worse in recent years while Khan has been Mayor. That’s why London desperately needs to vote for a change on May 2nd: the Khan status quo is well past its sell-by date. I'm proud to be from Liverpool. It's a city with a long and complex history. In recent decades, Liverpool has become known for being a political outsider. There's many reasons for this; from Hillsborough, the Toxteth riots and Thatcher's 'managed decline' of the city, to banning The Sun, becoming a cultural capital of Europe and a Labour (often left-wing) stronghold. Liverpool has been shaped - for better or for worse - by many different government policies. It's a great city, but a poor city, made worse by the UK's programme of austerity that started in 2010. Since then, Liverpool City Council has had a 35% reduction in funding. As of this year, life expectancy is dropping, nearly 1 in 3 children live in relative poverty, and there has been an eleven fold increase in homeless households in temporary accommodation since 2010. In this fantastic piece of journalism from Liam Thorp, the impact of 14 years of Conservative policy and austerity is laid bare, putting communities and people at the heart of what that looks like. It's sobering, anger-inducing and at times, upsetting. But it's also an essential read as we head towards the general election on 4th July. In Liverpool, and in communities across the UK, we need to see bold action from the next government to give people a chance again. We, as a country, can't afford for it to get worse than this. This is great news. I support the Auckland Mayor to reduce the overheads and unnecessary beauracracy in Auckland City Council. I also encourage the Mayor to consider my policy proposal for #RatesEquity - this essentially means narrowing the gap in the rates charges between commercial and residential property rates in order to alleviate costs for businesses and more fairly share the rates burden around the city. Rates Equity also includes the recommendation to end developer contribution charges and include this as a regular expense item which is included in all rates payments. https://lnkd.in/gEfCcBxn

London's #housingcrisis is a major drag on the economy. To demonstrate this, we commissioned fresh research from NERA alongside the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, Trust for London, and The G15. The analysis uses a new economic model to outline the significant impact housing affordability has on London’s productivity and growth. It concludes that a one per cent increase in housing affordability in London could yield a boost of £7.3 billion in economic output over a decade. More affordable housing would help reduce homelessness in the capital, as well as make it easier for London employers to attract and retain workers, and enable households and businesses to invest in more productive economic activity. As our chair, Cllr Claire Holland, says: "The chronic shortage of affordable housing in the capital is driving up homelessness and putting the brakes on London’s economic growth. “Astronomical housing costs absorb a huge proportion of Londoners’ income, make it harder for businesses to recruit, and are a clear drag on productivity. “This is the latest evidence of why increased investment in affordable housing is so crucial. Tackling London’s housing pressures will boost productivity and help generate the economic growth we all want to see.” Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eF43Phwp #localgov #London #Londonpolitics #housing #housingpolicy #economicdevelopment #economicgrowth

First full day for me at the Labour Conference. So some initial thoughts. Housing and Planning are one the big issues and topics being discussed..Not surprisingly then, that the housing fringe events are packed. I have counted 50 housing related fringe events over the 3 days. Strategic Planning is firmly back on the agenda. - I need to dig out my saved copies of the SERplan ( knew it was worth keeping them) - more to come on this from Government. The Government are absolutely resolute on making sure that all Authorities provide their housing numbers, and will get tough on those who don't. Announcements on new town locations could come sooner than anticipated, The task force has the flexibility to report earlier if they want. We still have a plan led system and plan coverage must increase with possible intervention for those who don't plan. LPA lack of planning resourse is acknowledged but can exciting big picture strategic planning bring more people in to the profession? Finally is Liverpool ialways this wet.?
