Various Penfolds-related points made at: https://lnkd.in/gAUmfR_d Opening with this paragraph: "Penfolds Grange, the golden goose of Australian wine, is on a run of excellence never before seen in its history, or certainly not seen in the past 50 years. This does not mean that Penfolds Grange is a better wine now than it ever was; that’s simply not true. But it is now more consistently excellent. Penfolds hasn’t made a lesser Grange Shiraz since the 2000 release (88/100, The Winefront). Yes, the 2003 Penfolds Grange (93/100) and the 2011 (92+/100) are both silver medal offerings in our view, but they still rate as good wines. The more compelling point though is that the past nine releases of Penfolds Grange Shiraz have all scored 96 points or higher. In the 1990s, there were five Penfolds Grange releases with a score of 93 or lower, followed by the infamous 88-point 2000 release. If the 2021 Penfolds Grange (released this time next year) warrants a rating of 96 points or higher, it will be the tenth Penfolds Grange in a row to achieve such a rating." And including this paragraph: "For all this quality, and these scores, and these prices, only one thing more need be said. When you drink a bottle of Grange, you’re drinking more than a bottle of wine. Other Australian wines, at least in their youth, compare incredibly favourably for quality, and even more favourably for value. But, in many (most) Australian social circles, no wine-related sentence quite compares to: we opened a bottle of Grange." More: https://lnkd.in/gAUmfR_d

CALIFORNIA WINE AND VINEYARDS ARE IN TROUBLE The statistics speak volumes: California is America’s number-one wine producer, producing 81 percent of U.S. wine sales. There are approximately 637,000 acres planted to wine grapes, making the Golden State the fourth-largest wine producer in the world. Not surprisingly, those endless rows of vines generate amazingly diverse wine tasting experiences—including everything from high-end pairings in the Napa Valley to neighborly barn tastings in Sonoma County to cave tours and winemaker chats from Mendocino County to Temecula. California Insider / Story by Siyamak Khorrami: California is home to some of the world’s most renowned wine regions, including Napa Valley, Sonoma, and Lodi, making it a top global wine producer. However, the state’s wine industry is facing a significant slowdown in sales. Wineries are filled with unsold inventory and grape growers are struggling to find buyers for their grapes, even at steep discounts. https://lnkd.in/ekRYzjaw

Though winemaking in Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe dates back to 1683, most vines were abandoned or torn out by war, and by 1997, only 10 had survived. Today, the region is comprised of nearly 200 wineries, making up 90% of Mexico’s wine. So who is responsible for the region’s recent growth? As SevenFifty Daily reports, “Pedro Poncelis Raygoza, the founder of Vinícola Punto y Aparte, believes the identity of Valle de Guadalupe is in the hands of the next generation of winemakers.” Raygoza, once named the best sommelier in Mexico by the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale, may have a point. In recent years, we have seen second- and third-generation vintners transforming their family vineyards and producing innovative wines that excite today’s wine consumers. The best of the best from Redman Wines, The Redman is a blend of Cabernet and Shiraz (70/30). An old school style, this is worth getting around if you prefer traditional winemaking. Proven to develop with age, this is a keeper. https://buff.ly/3WyenPI

The El Dorado AVA produces what the sommeliers say they like about European wines. Grapes that retain acid into ripening. This happens best in the Mesic temperature regime, above about 1,800 feet elevation. https://lnkd.in/gba4WDtE

Can you make sparkling wine in Texas? Texan sparkling might be in its infancy but it could just help to write the next chapter of the state's wine story, writes LM Archer. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e8vMCxdd

Other states, other wines We have already discussed the most important wine regions of North America; from New York, Oregon, Washington to California. But wine is made in almost all US states. Let's review the other states and their wines. Cross-border Idaho As we already touched on in Oregon's Cross-Border Wines, Idaho does not have an AVA that is entirely within its own borders. Snake River Valley is partly located in Oregon, but also the other appellation Lewis Clark Valley AVA for wines is partly located in one of the other states, Washington. This is the third appellation in Idaho, after Snake River Valley and Eagle Foothills, and was recognized in 2016. It extends along the courses of the Clearwater and Snake rivers. Of the 124,000 hectares allocated as an appellation, only 40 hectares have been planted. Due to the lower hills of the river area, it is warmer here in the summer. In winter it can go down to -20C, making frost damage a real risk. https://lnkd.in/e4phWBxC

Wine IQ: How is a vintner different than a winery and vineyard? Vanessa Robledo, owner of Vintne’sr Diary, was gracious enough to explain the differences to me during our conversation at the inaugural La Onda music festival in Napa. A vintner grows the crop as well as produces and markets the wine. Whereas a vineyard only grows grapes and a winery produces wine. Those in the cheese world , may consider a vintner similar to a farmstead cheese. Vanessa clarified this distinction to me with great patience and knowledge as well as discussing her vision. Vintner’s Diary (Napa, CA) is a third generation female owned business. It is the only Latina vintner and produces a delightful Rose’, which continues to find its way on menus, in homes, and venues like La Onda. Vanessa explained the choice of the word Diary is specific to the story she is sharing. Wine and the food industry are paired closely and are a great example of how 1+1=3. Whether paired with cheese, fruit, or your favorite meal, Rose’ is flexible and versatile. Napa, Sonoma, or anyone of the other great wine producing regions across the USA, are great destinations to get to know the story and the people behind the wine. #vintnersdiary #laonda #wine #foodindustry @foodservicexpert.com
