What do you know about cars' #exhaust systems? Internal combustion engines execute explosions inside their cylinders so as to generate the power that will move the car. Exhaust gas is a byproduct of those reactions; the engine must eliminate it before initiating a new cycle. (𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝟏/𝟑) There are three primary types of ways that an internal combustion engine can produce power. ✔️The most common is a naturally aspirated engine. ✔️The second most common is a turbocharged engine. ✔️And finally the third way is a supercharged engine. What is a supercharger and how does it work? A supercharger is an air compressor that increases the pressure of air supplied to an internal combustion engine. This aids in higher power output as the engine gets more oxygen in each of its intake cycles and helps it burn more fuel. ⚙️ Mechanical Superchargers Mechanical superchargers are the most common types of superchargers. The three most common types of superchargers in automotive applications are the Roots, Lysholm twin-screw, and centrifugal. 🔺 A Roots-style supercharger utilizes 2 lobes that mesh together with air being compressed in pockets between the lobes. In some applications, three lobes can be used to compress the air. This is the same type of supercharger that is found on the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and ZR1. 🔺 A Lysholm twin-screw supercharger is a positive displacement supercharger (just like the Root style) and it utilizes two close-tolerance screws to compress air. These are similar to worm gears. 🔺 A centrifugal supercharger looks similar to the compressor side of a turbocharger and that’s because it essentially is that.
