Reading and creative writing can help improve healing from domestic abuse, new research suggests. As part of the "Coercive Control: From Literature into Law" project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Dr Hannah Roche at the University of York and Professor Katy Mullin at the University of Leeds have worked with the Bradford-based charity Staying Put to organise a series of workshops with women with lived experience of domestic abuse and sexual violence. The group has discussed fiction and poetry by writers ranging from the Brontës to Bernardine Evaristo. The texts and extracts have helped women in the group to recognise the signs and patterns of coercive control and to process their own experiences. The reading and creative writing workshops now form part of Staying Put’s Intervention and Prevention provision for women in refuges. The workshops show how imaginative writing can serve both a therapeutic and an educative purpose, helping to prevent future abuse. When was the last time YOU refreshed your practice?? Person-Centred Language is often hurried over. It’s often seen as “fluff”. I can promise you the care team with an extremely responsive resident *is not* wanting a basic refresher on it. But using language that identifies someone living with dementia AS A PERSON changes the entire process & outcome. Magic happens when we talk about a person. Frustration, animosity, exasperation melts away. We are no longer “dealing with a behaviour”. We are caring for a person. Those seeds are sown in every care interaction. In every shift report. In every documented nursing note. In every meal that is served or assisted. Imagine, the improvement in outcomes we would see if this actually happened.

How to be a catcher: From the Kanamori lecture at Driebergen Today I translate some part of Kanamori lecture at Driebergen on 5th September 2012. He explained what to do to become a catcher. "Children watch adults very closely. Of course, they look at fashion and facial expressions, but the most important thing is the way Kanamori lives, the way he learns, and the way he treats people. That is a sign to the child as well. My body language, the way I work and live day in and day out, is a sign to my children. From these signs, they consider that this teacher will be able to catch a few out-of -control pitches . To decipher the voiceless voice of children, you cannot understand it just by being in the classroom. You have to have a deep relationship with the people who are working there. Children are more sensitive to the daily lives of adults than adults realize. They are worried behind the children's backs about the suffering, the poverty that comes from society, and the fact that their families have been cut off by their parents. Teachers should know what kind of situation the people in the community are in. That is why teachers cannot see the children just by being in the classroom. When school is over, I have been very active in the activities to protect the environment, to build farmland together with the citizens, and to protect peace. Another thing is that I have read a lot of literature. Literature is a very rich source of information about how human beings should live their lives. I hope you will go out into the community more. Read more books. Work more with nature. Play with children. I believe that is the way to become a great catcher. "
