Social isolation is discussed widely in the research literature, but less has been written about intellectual isolation, which can hinder the research journey. I remember going to Parliament as a PhD student. I found it intriguing, beautiful and somewhat remote. I was there to present some research but it felt far removed from the actual policy business. Parliamentary Thematic Research Leads are aimed to bridge the gap between policy makers and academics. They provide a two way conduit - informing policy with sound research and providing updates to the researchers in universities. The scheme is growing this month as new post holders come into place. In a time when money everywhere is tight and many might ponder what universities do for us every communication link is vital. Three fully funded Ph.D positions in Economic History: -     Taxation, inequality, and welfare state policies (led by Sara Torregrosa, one position) -     Energy transitions, natural resources, and industrialization (led by Cristián Ducoing, two positions)

Prospective PhD candidates in Germany might apply in two ways. Two of these options are to apply to a structured programme or to get a professor, both of which will require a financial support. In the former case, you would write to a professor and express your interest in becoming a doctorate researcher on his team; in the latter, you would apply to a preexisting programme and hope for admittance. The former is by far the more popular, and it goes by several names: paternal PhD, supervising PhD, unstructured PhD, and so on. You may join a project that the professor has already planned or you come up with your own idea and apply for funding on your own. From the first year until the last, you'll have to devote yourself entirely to researching the subject at hand. Until the last disputation and submission of the final dissertation or thesis, you will need to publish your research aims in high impact journals. The second option, the structured PhD, requires students to enrol in a preexisting university-sponsored course. Comparable to a master's degree programme, students complete units or modules and then take tests at the end of each semester to determine their final results. Writing the thesis or dissertation takes up the last year of the three- or four-year programme. All of these procedures are extremely thorough, and the applicant gets to decide the one they like. As a social science researcher, I am outraged the Government has cut funding for humanities and social service research! The justification for this decision is humanities and social science research does not add as much value to the economy. This is fundamentally a narrow, short sighted and misguided perspective. Humanities and social science researchers add tremendous value to the economy by helping the wellbeing of people and challenging and addressing inequalities. When there is equity and wellbeing, our economy will thrive. To quote the article: Minister Judith Collins said humanities and social sciences would no longer be supported, and the panels would be disbanded by next year. Areas such as physics, chemistry, maths, engineering and biomedical sciences made more of an impact on the economy, she said. "The government has been clear in its mandate to rebuild our economy. We are focused on a system that supports growth, and a science sector that drives high-tech, high-productivity, high-value businesses and jobs." Great to see education in conflict and crisis affected attracts much needed research focus. ERICC Research Consortium developed and published a conceptual Framwork for Education Research in Conflict and Protracted Crisis. Creating such framework in conflict-affected areas is critical for a number of reasons. Firstly, it addresses these gaps is critical for developing more effective interventions and policies that are truly responsive to the needs of affected people Secondly, it offers a structured way to comprehending complicated processes, allowing scholars to successfully analyse issues such as governance, social cohesion, and economic recovery. Thirdly, it assists uncover crucial factors and linkages, allowing for more focused and meaningful research. Well done ERICC Research Consortium for initiating such pioneering work.
