Military Service Academy Majors & Career Paths Highlights: ▪️If your student is smart, athletic, and/or interested in leadership, keeping their mind open to military service academies or the ROTC can give them more options. ▪️Military officers are essentially the managerial layer of the military as an organization. About 15% of personnel fall into this category. ▪️While military service academies may seem like the right financial fit, there are more requirements to get in, and there is a five-year commitment upon graduation. ▪️The Naval Academy and Air Force Academy are very tech and STEM-focused. The Merchant Marine and Coast Guard academies are more certification-focused. However, these are not the only majors available. ▪️Military service academies are not an automatic road to front-line heavy combat. ▪️Your student should understand the opportunity costs for attending the academies. The skills gap is eating the lunch of many manufacturers. However, when I look across hiring practices I often see even bigger gaps. US Navy Chief Yeoman Jasmine LaRue, from Mobile, Alabama, has been serving for 12 years and is currently with Naval Special Warfare Command - Navy SEAL & SWCC Teams. We asked about her #CallToService, career progression, and how time in uniform has changed her. "My call to service is being a servant leader and making sure our #Sailors have all the support they need to support and complete the mission. When I joined back in 2012, I had no real goals or aspirations and made that decision because I did not want to go to college and did not want to stay in my hometown." #ForgedByTheSea "I have a goal I would like to reach before retiring and that’s to become a Command Senior Chief or a Command Master Chief, because in the current climate, it is getting harder for Sailors to continue in service and persevere through, in many cases at no fault of their own, in many cases it’s the leadership." #WhyIServe "I believe I can use my call to service to show Sailors there is leadership out there that cares and that they are not just a quota to meet or a billet to fill. I feel I can best do that as a Command Senior Chief or Master Chief." #Transform "I have changed in so many ways that even I still cannot believe it. I’m a college graduate now and I have been able to come out of my comfort zone and have many exuberating experiences. Negativity can spread like wildfire when you surround yourself with the wrong crowd. Surround yourself with personnel who have good character and have your best interest in mind. It may not feel like it at times but remember that what you do is important no matter how minute you may think it is, because we each are a small piece of the bigger puzzle and working together is what will help complete the mission. Most importantly, stay true to yourself and your personal values as a human, and always make time to take of your mind, body, and soul."

I met a young man about to ship out to Navy boot camp. I gave him two pieces of advice that I give everybody about to join the military.   The first piece I can't take credit for, it was given to me the night before I-Day at the Naval Academy in 1996. Essentially it's that no matter how funny, cool, or tough I thought doing or saying it would make me look, just don't. That doesn't mean you don't speak up or lead when required, but don't bring that unneeded attention on yourself or your peers.   The second is one that got me through several difficult schools and training during my service. And that is to keep in mind that no matter what somebody tells you, you are not the weakest, slowest, or least gifted person to ever attempt or complete the program.  If others can see it through and graduate, so can you.   What I love about these two philosophies is they can apply to any service or nation, and really almost any situation inside or outside the military. Today, I had the opportunity to expand my knowledge on the U.S. Naval Community College. I encourage all Naval Leaders to read these interesting facts and nominate a creditable Sailor from their command. USNCC provides naval-relevant associate degree levels and stackable certificates in naval-relevant fields to enlisted service members. It became established in 2021 in order to progress war fighting skills capability. Partnering with regionally accredited universities, its goal is to remain responsive to the fleet through emerging Navy programs and needs such as leadership, engineering, data analytics, cybersecurity, aviation and many more. It does not limit service members to in rate only specific classes. It does not touch TA or GI Bill funding. It does not require a specific time in service. It’s 100% funded. A really good long form article (with data) illustrating the tension at Service academies between the need for diverse perspectives in their officer corps and systems that often disadvantage the diverse individuals. While this tension is seen in the experiences of the socio-economically diverse and prior enlisted (both apply to me), it is most acute for racial diversity because it is an ever-visible part of a students identity. The academy prep schools like the United States Military Academy Preparatory School provide immense value by improving the access to and success of these more of these diverse populations. However, the core quantitative “meritocracy” of the academies present inherent challenges evidenced by the data in this article. The article sums up the challenges of quantifying every aspect of “merit” for officer candidates: “Owens has expressed concern that cadets are too often treated as numbers: their GPA or class rankings that determine who gets coveted assignments such as a place in flight school…But I've been talked down to more because of my class rank than because I'm a Black man."
