Enhancing online safety for children is more crucial than ever, as they navigate the digital world. Ofcom's research reveals that children as young as 5 are increasingly present online, a third use social media unsupervised and a growing number have personal profiles. You can read more about this in Ofcom's report here: https://lnkd.in/ecx2fpX8 It's clear that regulating content alone is no longer sufficient. We must ensure that digital services are safe by design, incorporating independent checks and audits of risk assessments and a duty to educate and empower users. New paper alert! OII Director Vicki Nash and OII Visiting Policy Fellow Lisa Felton have published 'Treating the symptoms or the disease? Analysing the UK Online Safety Act's approach to digital regulation' in the Policy and Internet Journal. The paper assesses the UK's Online Safety Act 2023 (OSA), arguing that although the Act does incorporate measures to regulate platform design, it faces some challenges in ensuring proportionality and accountability. It also notes that its focus on content controls may limit its ability to effectively improve online safety, particularly as services evolve. Read the full open access article here:
