🏢There’s a metaphor in this pic… I need your suggestions on what it is!! I attended Houston Chemical Association luncheon today. Always a great opportunity connect with other leaders across the industry. Todays meeting was really special because it was the annual scholarship luncheon, where **29 scholarships** were presented!! Thank you David Fortune and the scholarship committee! Back to the pic… The meeting was held at the Petroleum Club - top floor of this building. Lots of construction going on in this building and adjacent ones - sidewalks closed, guardrails and safety tape everywhere. Inside the building and on the top floors - beautiful business as usual - or so it seemed. As I was leaving, which was a circuitous route due to construction, I paused to look back - and noted the many boarded up windows. You might recall that in May 2024, downtown Houston experienced severe wind shears over 100 MPH which knocked windows out and damaged many office buildings. This was followed by Hurricane Beryl just 2 months later… My observations… - Recovery - economic, structural - takes many months. And continues, often unseen and underappreciated. - Resilience is critical - Figuring out ways for business to continue forward is critical - keeping people employed and generating economic value. - the chemical industry is a bit like this building at the moment… business as usual in many places, but “looking ugly” in others.

Safety & the Celebration of Father’s Day (Previously published but worth repeating). Yesterday many of you celebrated the special Fathers in your lives but you may not be aware of the connection of Father’s Day to safety. In December 1907, over 350 mine workers were killed in the Monongah mine disaster in West Virginia. Although an official cause was never announced, it is widely believed that the explosion resulted when one of the miner’s open flame lamps ignited coal dust or methane gas in the inadequately ventilated mine. A contributing factor, according to my friend and safety expert Craig Clapper, was the fact that two of the mines were connected by a tunnel so they could be ventilated by a single entrance. When the explosion occurred, both mines collapsed due to this connection. More than 1,000 children were left fatherless by this disaster and one of those children, Grace Clayton, suggested to her pastor that a special day be set aside to honor the lost fathers which he obliged. This Sunday celebration did not gain traction for some time, and it wasn’t until many years later that Father’s Day was named as an official holiday. Like other safety events of this magnitude, the Monongah mine explosion prompted changes for the better in the mining industry. In 1910, Congress created the U.S. Bureau of Mines to improve inspections and create safer mine conditions. So, while this event was an undeniable tragedy, it did initiate safety improvements that undoubtedly saved the lives of others. It also helped to create the opportunity for us to honor and celebrate fathers – both those still with us and those we have lost. #safety #highreliability #fathersday #inspections #leadership #safetyleadership

2024 Brownfields Conference: 1. Great opportunity for all stakeholders (consultants, owners, community leaders, government agents) to convene for a common learning experience 2. 2020 versus 2024 - what a difference (no elbow bumping) ! 3. PFAS - they are still the difficult child in the room 4. PA is resilient - our brownfield sites have once again become cornerstones of our communities 5. Funding for sites is available from state and federal resources, but wow, is it complicated 6. Lots of good swag in the vendor room - chocolate and slinkies and ice cream. 7. Give people limitless coffee 8. Lead values - they will be changing. Don’t eat lead paint chips. 9. Due diligence is important. ASTM E1527-13 has expired… 10. Geologists are fun people 11.
