Has anyone ever seen an accessibility overlay not make things worse? So, everyone by now probably knows my professional opinion of these things in their current form. But I occasionally run across them in the wild, here is a recent example. I was recently using a video conferencing platform used for making high quality videos for broadcast / posting. When I got in to start my session, I landed on a button / shortcut that said use in screen reader mode. Okay, sure, maybe they have flattened the interface in that mode to make it easier to navigate. (Yes I was feeling optimistic.) So I try it. I spend 5 minutes trying to find the controls to adjust my microphone, audio output, and camera to be used in the session and can’t find them anywhere. I decide to log out and back in and this time not enable screen reader mode, and low and behold, there are the form fields to adjust the inputs I needed. So, while I eventually determined the overlay did add some missing labels to some buttons, it removed essential features of the site and made them entirely unavailable. Personally the missing features were more of a problem for me than the unlabeled controls were. #a11y #fail *reminder: the above is my opinion alone and does not represent the opinion of my employer.
