AI continues to penetrate into mainstream business activities. It has potential to support the investment sector in their research and decision making (make no mistake however, it will not replace the judgement, competencies and skills of portfolio managers). More interesting is the fact that it could be used to help Compliance Professionals conduct surveillance and oversight activities to support ongoing compliance by the retail investment sector. This is of course predicated on high quality data and an understanding of any biases within the technology. The EU’s financial markets regulator has issued initial guidance (see link below) to firms using AI when providing investment services to retail clients. The statement succinctly and nicely provides a message that, I think, corporate management in any organization should bear in mind. 1. "The firm’s management body should have an appropriate understanding of how AI technologies are applied and used within their firm and should ensure appropriate oversight of these technologies. This oversight is crucial to ensure that the AI systems align with the firm's overall strategy, risk tolerance, and compliance framework." 2. "It is the responsibility of the management body to establish robust governance structures that monitor the performance and impact of AI tools on the firm's services." 3. AIMA - The Alternative Investment Management Association has voiced concerns over new AI-specific regulations in response to the European Commission's consultation on AI in financial services. While acknowledging the efficiency gains generative AI offers to alternative investment managers, AIMA warns that introducing additional regulations could stifle innovation and put Europe’s investment managers at a global disadvantage 📉      The argument is that the financial services sector is already governed by well-established regulatory frameworks that provide effective oversight of technology use. Introducing further AI-specific policies may be unnecessary and could limit the industry's ability to compete on the global stage 🌎      As AI adoption grows, striking the right balance between fostering innovation and ensuring oversight will be a challenge.
