Vikas Swarup—diplomat, TV host, and bestselling author—joins this week's Asian Review of Books / New Books Network podcast to talk about his newest novel, "The Girl With The Seven Lives," from Simon & Schuster India. As a writer, Swarup is perhaps best known for his book "Q&A", which eventually became the film Slumdog Millionaire. But after three novels, he had to take a break because of his *other* job: One of India's most important diplomats. "There was no time to even think about a book, let alone write one," he says. His newest novel is about a woman forced to reinvent herself several times over, and features scenarios ripped straight from India's newspapers. Will this fast-paced novel also be adapted for the screen, like his previous works? "When I'm writing a novel, I am writing a novel. I am not writing a screenplay," he says, explaining that if he did try to squeeze in something designed for film, he'd end up with neither a "good novel" nor a "good film or a web series."
