The SOHS is an independent study that compiles the latest statistics on the size and scope of the humanitarian system and assesses overall performance and progress of global humanitarian response. It is a critical element of ALNAP’s strategic focus on monitoring and reporting on system-wide performance. A pilot exercise and four subsequent editions (2012, 2015, 2018 and 2022) have already provided a baseline and an analysis of performance between 2008 and 2021. We are now working on the sixth edition. Here I present the five essential qualities that have not only guided me but have also propelled me to excel in this demanding field. 1. Unwavering Commitment to the Mission A humanitarian Field Coordinator must be unwavering to the organization's mission and values. This steadfast belief fuels their drive to make a tangible difference in the lives of beneficiaries. They are driven by a deep sense of purpose and a desire to alleviate suffering and promote human dignity. 2. Exceptional Communication and Diplomacy Skills Effective communication is paramount in humanitarian operations. Field Coordinators must be able to convey complex information clearly and concisely to a wide range of stakeholders, including beneficiaries, staff, donors, and government officials. They must also possess exceptional diplomatic skills to navigate sensitive cultural and political landscapes and build strong relationships with local communities. 3.
