The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris officially get underway (competition actually started on Wednesday) today with the most ambitious Opening Ceremonies ever conducted. What most people won’t be thinking about (and brands interested in marketing around the Olympics need to be) is that today not only marks the start of the Summer Olympics, but it also comes just 561 days before the start of the 2026 Winter Games in Italy. The short turnaround between Summer and Winter Olympics is a stark contrast to the 902 days that passed between the opening of the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing and the start of the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. That means brands who want to join in on the Olympic movement have 341 fewer days to sign deals, build strategies and execute. So, as you enjoy the amazing competition that will unfold in Paris (full schedule below), let’s start to have that discussion about how to capture the momentum of partnering with a national governing body as it builds towards sending America’s best to Italy in 2026. 👉 Olympic Schedule: https://lnkd.in/dknDA74i #thetimeisnow #planahead #gousa

The modern Olympic Games have changed a lot since they began more than 120 years ago. For example, tug-of-war has come and gone as an Olympic sport. We don't shoot at live pigeons anymore. At the first modern Games in Athens, Greece (1896), even the prizes were different. There was no gold medal. First-place winners received a silver medal and an olive branch. Second place was awarded a bronze medal and a laurel branch. Third place got a pat on the back and a wish for better luck next time. The current three-medal system arrived at the next Olympic Games, held in Paris in 1900. First place received a gilt silver medal (silver coated in a thin layer of gold), followed by a simple silver medal for second place and bronze for third. First-place winners at the 1904 St. Louis Olympic Games got solid gold medals for the first time. Today, original Olympic first-place medals are pretty rare — there were only 43 events at the first modern Games, and many medals have been lost to time, though a few have come up for auction in the last couple of decades. One silver medal that was never awarded at the event sold in 2012 for around $32,000. It was intended for a boat race that was canceled due to high winds. Two more were sold in July 2021 and January 2024 for $180,000 and $112,000, respectively. Even now, Olympic "gold medals" are still mostly silver. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) mandates they be composed of at least 92.5% silver. Of course, host countries mint their own medals, and often put personalized touches inside. Japan, used metal from obsolete electronics. For the 2024 Paris Games, France incorporated pieces of the Eiffel Tower into the medals. #ClaimsKrewe

Excitement is building for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, set to begin on July 26. According to a recent Leger survey for the Association for Canadian Studies, conducted from July 12-15, 2024, Canadians have high expectations for their athletes, anticipating a medal count surpassing the 24 medals won in Tokyo 2020, where Canada finished 11th overall. Remarkably, 75% of those medals were won by women. The survey, which involved 1,784 respondents, highlights that most Canadians view the country as a top-ten contender in international sports and expect a top-ten finish in Paris. Additionally, Canadians are divided on their preference between the Summer and Winter Olympics but agree that performance is more important than winning. The International Olympic Committee – IOC has its fair share of controversies but there is one which particularly bugs me every 4 years. They go through a very elaborate protocol for sequencing countries for the Parade of Nations (Greece is traditionally first, the host nation last. The majority of the others show up alphabetically – as in the language of the host). Nice, but then after that detail they cop out. They don’t officially rank countries by medals. And their unofficial list is sequenced by amount of Gold Medals each country wins. Only in a tie in Golds, do the Silvers and Bronzes count. So, at each Games, on most days you have the US ranked 2nd, 3rd or 5th, even when they easily have the most total medals. Look at the Le Monde medal tracker by date in the linked article, and you can see by the 3rd day at the Paris games, the US already had the most medals and its lead kept growing. Now it has 30 more medals than the 2nd ranked China. However, there is still a chance China could close it out, ranked 1st because they may end up with most Golds. Why even bother to award Silver and Bronze medals in that case? How insulting to those athletes, when the margin of difference between these elite athletes is so tiny.
