The shifting winds of the U.S. economy in the past year have left designers disoriented. Officially, the labor market is still on fire, with job growth data from the Department of Labor continuing to surprise economists, adding more than 600,000 jobs in the first two months of 2024. But if you work in tech, the picture looks decidedly different. The tech industry—the terrain of many designers—lost more than 50,000 worldwide jobs between January and March of 2024, according to tracker site layoffs.fyi, as it continues to downsize following more than a decade of unfettered headcount growth and the rising specter of AI. https://lnkd.in/eVFdux4v

Designers, it's time to start valuing your time. More top companies have stopped giving take-home assignments to experienced designers, recognizing that whiteboard challenges are enough to assess their skills. While take-home assignments may still be appropriate for entry-level designers, it's important to remember that your time has value. In fact, offering payment for take-home assignments can help attract top talent. Many skilled designers skip candidacy simply because the take home assignment is not interesting to them. Let’s prioritise smart hiring processes that respect both the company’s and the candidate’s time. #design #designhiring #assignment #payment

"Companies only hire senior designers now. It's harder to find roles as a mid-level." I've heard designers saying this in last few years. However the data doesn't back that up—at least not over the last two years. The chart below shows the distribution of design job postings by level (data by TrueUp). The proportions haven't changed much. Mid/entry-level jobs are still over 40% of the market. So I assume that the claim comes from justified frustration given the challenging job market. However, the numbers don't support it. I'll publish more data later this week.

Indicative only of a much larger dataset, doesn't necessarily reflect where we're all at by region/country — But interesting once the full report comes out I suppose. Predicting this might skew more come next year. As the appetite for Sr level roles increase.

Do recruiters really have a Do Not Hire list? Sounds subjective. Is this legal? No wonder there are senior designers who haven't been hired. The design industry is subjective. #recruiters #design #hiringprocess #seniordesigners #jobseekers

Dear Recruiters. Design job is not the same as other jobs. If you found candidate which looks similar to requirements in Job description, then you did your job completely. Bu this approach doesn't applies to Design (UI/UX, Product, Visual, etc) candidates. And it is hard to understand probably from your point of view. If the main criteria of evaluation of skills is a portfolio, then you must hire recruiter with Design experience, who can understand the quality of portfolio. Conclusion: If you found a candidate in design, that's doesn't mean that you finished your work.

The design industry is dynamic, and so are the relationships within it. While some designers and recruiters have established successful partnerships, there's always room for improvement. Let's discuss: Overcoming the Stigma: Many designers view recruiters as pushy or only interested in filling positions. How can we change this perception? Building Trust: What steps can you take to build trust with a recruiter? Maximizing Your Time: How can you efficiently evaluate recruiter opportunities? Defining Your Career Goals: Clearly communicating your career aspirations to recruiters can improve your chances of finding the right fit. By understanding the challenges and opportunities, designers can build stronger relationships with recruiters and ultimately advance their careers. Share your experiences and insights to help other designers navigate the recruiting landscape. #3pcareers #architecture #interiordesign #civilengineering #landdevelopment #landscapearchitecture #designprofessionals #designcareers #designjobs #careers #hr #opportunities #REVIT #adobe
