Automotive lightweighting is primarily achieved through the adoption of new materials, new processes, and optimized structural designs. Its classification is mainly based on the technologies and methods used. In the 1970s, after the first oil crisis, automotive lightweighting began to be taken seriously as manufacturers sought to reduce vehicle weight to improve fuel efficiency. From 2020 to the present day, automotive lightweighting has been involved in all aspects of the entire vehicle, including the body, chassis, powertrain, etc. Additionally, the wave of electrification has brought new challenges and opportunities for lightweighting, especially in the design and material selection of battery packs. The upstream area of automotive lightweighting mainly includes the production and supply of lightweight materials, such as high-strength steels, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, and carbon fiber composites. These material suppliers usually work closely with automotive component manufacturers to develop high-performance materials suitable for automotive lightweighting. The downstream application industries of automotive lightweighting are extensive, covering the entire automotive manufacturing industry. From body structure, chassis, powertrain to interior and exterior components, the application of lightweighting technology can be seen. In today's automotive manufacturing industry, lightweighting has become a key goal. Lightweighting helps improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and enhance vehicle performance. Carbon fiber composites, as a lightweight material, are gradually becoming one of the primary choices in the automotive manufacturing industry, especially in the application of car hoods. Traditional car hoods are typically made of steel, which is relatively heavy and adversely affects fuel efficiency. In contrast, carbon fiber composites offer outstanding strength and lightweight properties, making them a superior choice. By manufacturing hoods with carbon fiber composites, automakers can significantly reduce the overall weight of vehicles, thereby improving fuel economy. Moreover, carbon fiber composites exhibit excellent corrosion resistance and fatigue performance, making car hoods more durable and able to maintain good condition for longer periods. This means that vehicle owners can perform less maintenance and replacements, thus saving on repair costs. However, the manufacturing cost of carbon fiber composites is relatively high, which may affect the final car price. The IZB 2024 in Wolfsburg has once again shown how trend-setting the international supplier industry is for the automotive sector. For us as an exhibitor and specialised manufacturer of cold forged parts, the trade fair was an ideal platform to present our new product ideas and tool concepts to a wide audience and make valuable industry contacts. The focus on sustainability was particularly inspiring this year. Sustainable production techniques that conserve resources and reduce environmental impact were at the centre of many discussions. In numerous discussions with OEMs and industry colleagues, it became clear that the pressure to reduce the CO2 footprint throughout the entire supply chain is increasing rapidly. We can make a significant contribution to this with our cold extrusion technologies: the lower material consumption and energy-efficient processing of raw materials are clear advantages over other processes. This allows us to reduce the amount of material used and minimise energy consumption at the same time - both decisive factors for more sustainable production. Automotive lightweighting is a major trend in the new energy vehicle industry. This is mainly because lightweighting can improve the range of new energy vehicles, reduce energy consumption, and help lower battery costs. Since the battery packs of new energy vehicles are relatively heavy, lightweighting is particularly important for these vehicles. Lightweighting technology can reduce the weight of components, improve driving range, and reduce component wear while meeting vehicle safety requirements. For example, according to the announcement by China Jushi, reducing the weight of the entire vehicle by 10% can improve fuel efficiency by 6%-8%; for every 100 kg reduction in vehicle weight, fuel consumption per 100 km can be reduced by 0.3-0.6 liters; and reducing vehicle weight by 1% can lower fuel consumption by 0.7%. Additionally, the application of lightweight technology can shorten braking distances, increase kinetic energy savings, improve acceleration performance, enhance maximum speed, and reduce noise and vibration. Lightweighting also helps control the cost of new energy vehicles. Magnesium Alloy Castings in the Automotive Field: In Early Stages with Immense Potential Magnesium alloy, with a short history of scaled application, presents significant growth potential in the automotive die-casting sector. China's development history of scaled magnesium alloy application is relatively recent, and the usage of magnesium alloy is transitioning from the introductory phase to the growth phase of its lifecycle. Currently, the production of magnesium alloy die castings accounts for a low proportion of the total die castings output. According to Yunhai Metals, China's per-vehicle magnesium usage is only 3-5 kg, compared to 15-20 kg in European and American cars, indicating substantial growth potential. We believe that magnesium alloy castings in the automotive field are still in the initial 0-1 phase of development, with the industry in its infancy and enormous future potential. As a major producer of automotive components, China's magnesium alloy automotive die-casting market capacity is expected to reach 689,000 tons and 1,241,000 tons in 2025 and 2030, respectively.
