The International Fresh Produce Association has defined #regenerativeagriculture for the #freshproduce industry! I appreciate the leadership that the fresh produce industry is showing to define the term for ourselves. (Big thanks to Tamara Muruetagoiena for all of your efforts here!) In this way, the industry is out ahead of outsiders trying to define the term for the industry. The definition was unveiled at this year's Global Produce & Floral Show, and is: "Regenerative agriculture is a holistic farming approach that aims to restore and enhance the natural recipients of agro-eco systems while supporting the long-term health and viability of agricultural businesses and communities. The foundation of this farming system is the integrated management of soil health, biodiversity, water resources, human health and climate." Holistic, comprehensive, and supportive of farmers and a livable planet that continues to support agriculture! Great work.

📣 Curious about how traditional practices meet innovation on the path to sustainable farming? Dive into our exclusive interview with Daniel Lovett from Lovett Family Farms Ltd, a third-generation farm in New Zealand's Mid-Canterbury plains, as he shares insights on regenerative agriculture and the transformation happening in potato farming. 🌱 Following the release of the McCain’s case study, we spoke with Daniel about the unique challenges his family farm faces and the regenerative practices they use to ensure long-term sustainability. From using cover crops to reduce soil erosion, increase water retention, and enhance soil health to planting more perennial native plants in less productive areas to improve biodiversity, their approach exemplifies the goals of our Regenerating Together Programme. 🥔 As Daniel explains, “Sacrificing short-term profits for the benefit of future generations is in our DNA.” Discover how they balance profitability with sustainable land stewardship and how the agri-food industry can support farmers on this journey. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/exGcFind #PeoplePoweredAgriculture

🌱 The Need for a New Approach in Agriculture 🌱 Conventional farming methods have long relied on viewing soil as a mere means of production, often leading to soil degradation through excessive chemical use, monocultures, and heavy tillage. Yet, soil is more than just a resource—it's a living ecosystem teeming with microbes that are vital for healthy, resilient food systems. With the rise of Climate Smart Agriculture, Regenerative Farming, Permaculture, and Natural Farming, there’s a powerful shift toward treating soil as a sacred foundation of life. Each of these practices emphasizes sustainable, soil-centered farming to create lasting food security without compromising our ecosystems. 🧪 However, as beneficial microbial inoculants flood the market, we must ask: Are these solutions truly sustainable? While some strains may boost productivity, they risk overshadowing native soil microbes and disrupting soil health. ✨ The true path to sustainable agriculture lies not in short-term fixes but in honoring traditional knowledge—a legacy of soil stewardship that has sustained communities for generations. 📖 Join the conversation! Follow my Substack for in-depth insights into sustainable agriculture and soil health. Together, let’s rethink how we grow our food to secure a healthier future for all. 🌍 👉 https://lnkd.in/eJ6p2tWP #SustainableAgriculture #SoilHealth #RegenerativeFarming #NaturalFarming #TraditionalKnowledge #SoilEcosystem

While many consumers recognize the term “regenerative agriculture,” a study found that only a small group accurately understands what it entails. European consumers often confuse “regenerative” with “organic” agriculture, viewing foods from local farms as sustainable and regenerative. The majority believe products from regenerative agriculture are healthier and tastier, highlighting the need for further research to align consumer expectations with reality and prevent greenwashing. #regenerative #farming #agriculture https://lnkd.in/gdcx49xG
