Modern democracies and mass media coevolved throughout the twentieth century. 2024 changes that. In 2008, Barack Obama became the first politician to use social media. In 2014, Narendra Modi too used social media effectively. However, both used social media as a secondary tool to mass media. In 2016, Donald Trump attacked mass media as "fake news" and won an election using social media as his primary tool. In 2020, we saw the emergence of peer to peer network media like 4chan which took the public sphere off the controlled environment. This resulted in major disruptions to public life such as the event on January 6th which was completely managed on channels such as these. Major social media platforms banned Donald Trump after January 6th 2021. In 2024, Donald Trump has his own social media platform - Truth Social, he is supported outright by a major social media platform - Twitter/X and unbanned on all other social media platforms. The peer to peer network media activity has only increased post 2020. The distrust of mass media and now even corporate social media is at peak. For the first time in 50 years, there will be no face-off between candidates on the most popular TV show "60 minutes". An event that typically happens in October. All this means only one thing - Mass media is passe. Networked media is in. Opinion polls and exit polls are unreliable. This election has gone underground. The people will truly speak on Nov 5th 2024. What a time to be alive!

Our latest study, "#Ozempic (Glucagon-like Peptide 1 Receptor Agonist) in Social Media Posts: Unveiling User Perspectives through Reddit Topic Modeling," is now published in Emerging Trends in #Drugs, #Addictions, and #Health. The use of Ozempic as a weight-loss tool is rapidly increasing among healthy individuals without a medical cause—a trend driven by social media and celebrity endorsements. In our study, we employed cutting-edge natural language processing (#NLP) techniques to analyze Reddit discussions. We found that conversations mainly focus on off-label use for appearance enhancement, including topics like weight loss tracking and insurance challenges. However, health risks associated with unsupervised Ozempic use are rarely discussed. The solutions are simple. The social media firms and web video giants need to be forced to change their dangerous algorithms which incentivise extreme content likely to result in reposts or ‘likes’ from people who agree with harmful, false and sensationalist material or comments. Those algorithms inevitably lead users down rabbit-holes of dark, invented conspiracies, and give them addictive ego and dopamine boosts when they share content, even if it is reckless and hateful or incites crime. The platforms also need to be classified immediately as publishers so they can be treated exactly like all other media organisations and subject to the normal laws and recourse by and for those whom their content injures. The web and social media behemoths are taking 900 million euro out of the Irish economy each year in advertising but are not putting in anywhere near the level of investment required to protect users from harmful and untrue content which damages social cohesion and democracy and can lead to crimes being committed. The best way to combat disinformation and misinformation is through providing fair and accurate information, so trusted sources like independent radio must be supported urgently, before it is too late. Clear-thinking and courage needed by policymakers.
