It was great to be able to chat with Dan from Triple M this week about the proposed ban on social media. I get it. I'm a parent of a tween, I'm worried too. But quick fix responses like a ban runs the risk of giving a false sense of security, while potentially cutting young people off from important sources of support. Even worse, they might feel they can't turn to us if something goes wrong online, when they inevitably find a way around the age restrictions. We need to do what we can to support young people and families to have open and informed conversations around internet safety. And we need policy solutions that lay the lion's share of responsibility to create conditions of safety on tech companies rather than already overburdened families.
