We know that as leaders, heightened self-awareness is essential to showing up as the best versions of ourselves. But awareness is not enough. Our research at Heidrick suggests that the most self-aware leaders who then have the courage to contend with their flaws are what most successful leaders have in common. Simply put, there are two simple tests we can take ourselves: TEST 1 for a leader is “can you name your blind spots?” TEST 2 for a leader is “do you have the backbone to battle the flaws?” Growing your backbone to engage and combat your flaw, therefore, becomes the most essential necessary muscle in the leadership anatomy. Ever worked for a leader who lacked self-awareness? Yep, most of us have been there. It’s like being on a ship with no compass—where are we even going? 🚢 When leaders crank up their self-awareness, they take themselves a little less seriously (in a good way), listen to others more carefully, and let #humility work its magic. But when they don't... well, let’s just say it can end in spectacular failure. 💥 The wild part? Self-awareness is the secret weapon for leadership transformation, yet only 15% of people are truly self-aware. Shocked? You should be, especially since 95% think they’ve got it down. 🙃 Let’s talk #leadership blind spots—stuff like being a people pleaser, #micromanaging, struggling with emotions, or getting distracted by every shiny object. 💡✨ Why do these blind spots stick around? ☑ The higher up you go, the fewer honest feedback sessions you get (cue the crickets). ☑We all have defense mechanisms. It’s easier to believe in our good intentions than face the mirror. ☑Society has gone full "me-focused" and individualistic, which makes self-reflection feel like finding a needle in a haystack. 🧠🧳 So, how do you up your self-awareness game? 🔍 External Awareness: Seek out 360-degree assessments, a coach, or even a personal board of advisors. 🤔 Internal Awareness: Embrace quiet reflection, take a retreat, and ask more "what" questions instead of "why" questions. The best leaders don’t just acknowledge their flaws; they tackle them head-on. It takes guts, but it's the ultimate way to use self-awareness as a tool for real transformation. P.S. Did you know that experiential learning (70%) and relationships/feedback (20%) trump formal education (10%) when it comes to leadership development? Check out my last post on the 70-20-10 model (link in comments). 📚💡 For more insights on the topic of self-awareness, check out this article from Heidrick & Struggles. #selfawareness #leadershipdevelopment #leadershipblindspots #feedback #upwardfeedback #leadershipeffectiveness #heidrickandstruggles #leadershipcoaching #executivecoach https://lnkd.in/gqRZpCTZ

An awareness of a leader's strengths, overplayed, can derail. This is one of the insights of our recent study, "Too Aware to Fail." Consider Elon Musk, perhaps the most interesting man in the world today, who acknowledged recently that he is "overly optimistic about timeframes." Musk’s intense performance standards could be unsustainable or even disastrous. Optimism, generally a strength in leadership, in this case, may lead to biting off more than he can chew. But Musk is aware of it, and, with some vulnerability, he put it out there. Warren Buffett also acknowledged one of his flaws as being too slow to remove "underperforming" managers." Empowering managers with authority and autonomy has served the legendary investor well over the years, but overused, it too can derail. Buffett's own self-awareness and humility, has accelerated his success over the decades. #tooawaretofail #heidrickstruggles #leadership

A heightened self-awareness of blind spots combined with the courage to combat the flaws will make a leader and their organization. A lack will break them. #leadershipmatters #selfarwareness #courage #humility https://lnkd.in/gUca96dp
