“It’s health that’s attractive…” As leaders, we invariably have unrealistic expectations for ourselves that are often imbalanced. Whether it’s how we look (physical attractiveness vs. health) or how our teams perform, we set the bar high (which is always good), but oftentimes, we set the bar impossibly out of reach. What’s the impact of this? When we create unrealistic images in our head that are beyond the realm of possibility, we run the risk of creating a spiral of shame that can devastate our team’s confidence and motivation to aspire to disciplined habits of success. Remember, that the R in SMART goals represents ‘realistic’. SMART goals can be stretch goals without breaking the spirit of the person or people trying to achieve them. It's true, leaders often obsess over their ‘looks’ both physically (how they look), but also how their team’s performance ‘looks’ to other teams and senior leadership. Know and understand that there is more to attractiveness than the looks your team gets. How healthy is your team’s vitality; how autonomous are they capable of being; how collaborative and flexible to change are they? We go to the gym, not just to look good, but to work on our stamina, and overall performance capability. Leading a team is no different. Your team’s ability to perform their job is only part of the expectation of high performance. What is the foundation your team rests upon in between surges of pressure and performance? What are your team’s values? What are their disciplined practices that demonstrate those values? What are their commitments to each other, their colleagues, and clients? “hyper-achiever-ness” No, it’s not a disease, but it can cause problems for leaders. Here's how my hyper-achiever-ness plays out: I love ticking off tasks and hitting targets, I get a burst of satisfaction with each success. My competitive nature propels me to do better than last time and better than the other guy! But the sense of accomplishment doesn't last long. Before long, I am pushing toward my next goal. The recent win never feels enough; the next one is more important. I worked with a team whose CEO was the same. No matter how big or complex the project, the leader always pushed the Team for more. People on that Team were in a constant state of drive. Salespeople know this feeling too—the next sale is the only one that measures their worth. While striving for more can energize and motivate, sometimes it's too much. As they say, "too much of a good thing is still too much." Constant drive isn't sustainable and can have the opposite effect. If you're always pushing for the next goal, take a step back and listen to your inner voice. Is your inner voice making you feel anxious, or enthusiastic? Are your Team members celebrating their success or are they downplaying it? Balance your drive to succeed with mindfulness to maintain a motivated, sustainable workplace.
