When asking a team member for a new analysis, consider providing them with a 'template' featuring blank figures. Why?Clarity: If you can't craft a template in 1 minute, your request might lack clarity, leading to multiple revisions. Precision: Even if they don't use it, a template increases the likelihood of the analysis aligning with your intentions. Empathy: Remember how it felt early in your career when an analysis you spent all night on wasn’t as intentioned & ended up in the trash. “Make it more scan-able” Recently a friend-of-a-friend, who’s VP of product with a company you likely use most days of your life, reached out to say they had read my portfolio and wanted to help. I was honored they took the time to actually read the entire thing, but that’s a story for another post. They said they had some feedback to make it stronger and offered to meet with me to share their ideas. As a job-seeker, this felt like winning the lottery. The work I’ve done in creating my portfolio has been mostly solitary. Companies don’t offer feedback to rejected candidates they’ve interviewed, and asking a peer to review my 60 slide presentation deck takes a type of boldness that I just don’t have. We met over coffee and this person shared so many tips for how to make my presentation deck stronger. I took notes, then rolled up my sleeves. The biggest takeaway confirmed a sneaking suspicion I already held: the deck is just too dense. “Make it more scan-able”, they said. The density came from a desire to ensure someone could understand it completely, in the absence of my presenting it. However, this density proved to shoot me in the foot during interviews. The text-packed slides took away from my storytelling, which was a rare piece of feedback I received from one of my most recent rejections. Anyway! Here it is—the slimmer, sleeker version that nobody asked for but I want everybody to see :)

Corporate jargon—it’s everywhere. We all use it, but sometimes, doesn’t it feel like the meaning gets lost in the noise? Phrases like “Let’s circle back” or “Time to pivot” may be familiar, but they’ve also become so overused. Matt Watson, lead web developer at Storyware, shared some refreshing alternatives that caught my attention. Instead of “Let’s circle back,” how about “I’ll investigate and get back to you”? Or replace “I’m not married to that idea” with “I’m not fettered by that proposal.” It may feel more formal, but it definitely stands out. In executive recruiting, clarity is crucial, and we lean on these phrases for convenience. But let’s be honest—some corporate lingo has outstayed its welcome. What’s your least favorite business cliché? Biggest lesson learned so far as I consult businesses and teams that could save you from hiring me: People in organizations are afraid (or don't think to ask) questions that start with WHY. Not like a kid asking why to everything. Strategic whys. (That's where consultants seem to earn their fee - knowing when to ask the strategic why...) Or you can just grab the naïve new hire and drag them into a meeting. You'll get plenty of whys. 😀 But listen and watch the explanation of the why. Clear and concise? Is it jargon soup? Unassailable? Does it fit with current mission? Asking whys can bring clarity. Why are you doing what you're doing today?
