🌿 What are effective strategies for climate protection and nature conservation? This critical question was the focus of a recent event hosted by DIE ZEIT, in collaboration with KfW. Leaders from business and nature conservation came together to share insights and innovative solutions. Our Executive Director Stefanie Lang, highlighted the vital role of long-term commitments and collaboration with local communities in achieving impactful and sustainable conservation outcomes. #Biodiversity #Conservation #SustainableFinancing Watch the video here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eJfMzxkt

In October 2023, I attended an international workshop titled “Making people part of #EcosystemRestoration in Europe”, which focused on the general society dimension to nature restoration and the impending wide scale ecosystem restoration that will be needed to tackle biodiversity loss, climate change and other societal problems. Over 60 participants representing science, policy and practice came together from countries across the EU and beyond. It was a great opportunity to share LIFE IP Wild Atlantic Nature's #NaturaCommunities concept with the international audience, which was really well received. The short film linked here highlights some of the insights from workshop participants, among others: - The public understanding and acceptance of restoration can be improved by strengthening the relationship between people and nature; - Governance structures and power relations are critical to consider because they determine how the costs and benefits of restoration measures are distributed amongst relevant actors; - Elements of justice must be considered throughout the restoration process to ensure that previously marginalised groups are sufficiently engaged. Restoration projects can be economically beneficial if the potential social and economic benefits (e.g. integrating different sectors and developing sustainable business models) are considered from the very beginning. https://lnkd.in/ec7jQdp9 #protectnature #communities #generationrestoration

📢 The Species Survival Commission aims to have a SSC National Species Specialist Group (NSSG) in every country. 🔹 Since countries or their governments are the ones that assume major international commitments regarding conservation, the need for the SSC to focus its efforts at the national level is becoming progressively evident. 🔹 Members with a particular transdisciplinary focus, e.g., sustainable use, human-wildlife conflict, invasive species, or climate change, are encouraged to be part of the NSSG. 🔗 Read the full guide about SSC NSSG: https://lnkd.in/ekU25ViA #WeAreSSC #SpeciesConservation #Biodiversity #ConservationWorks #IUCN

Join the Ocean Rights Movement: Advancing Ocean Conservation through Legal Recognition Follow us on Linkedin to join the movement for ocean conservation and legal recognition of ocean rights. Ocean conservation is more urgent than ever, with 10% to 15% of marine species facing extinction. The Ocean Rights Coalition (UK) is not just advocating for conservation but pushing for the legal recognition of the ocean’s rights. By securing these rights, we can enforce stronger protections, restore marine ecosystems, and ensure sustainable practices for current and future generations. Join us in this pioneering effort to move beyond traditional ocean conservation and establish legal rights that safeguard our oceans for generations to come. As a former marine geoscientist, it's been very rewarding to see the increase in public awareness of - and concern for - our oceans, resulting, at least partially, from the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (Ocean Decade). If you want to know more about the current state of marine biodiversity and why and how to sustain it, definitely check out the beautifully well done Economist Impact website "Beyond the Surface."

🌱 More Green, Less Gray: https://lnkd.in/e8-bxVE6 With a so-called “unsealing partnership”, the district of Kreis Euskirchen is promoting the renaturation of gravel gardens and parking lots to reduce the negative effects of soil sealing. This measure represents an important part of the county’s overall climate adaption strategy. 👇 This video - featuring interviews with community stakeholders and citizens -showcases the Euskirchen county's efforts to incorporate natural based-solutions that enhance local resilience. https://lnkd.in/e2K3JP3M . #LAND4CLIMATE #NSB #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateResilience #ClimateChange #ClimateHazards #Droughts #UrbanHeat #FlashFloods #WaterManagement #HorizonEU #HorizonProject CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency EU Environment and Climate

Phew! My first talk at an International Marine Conservation Congress, #IMCC7, went well. If you’re curious, the title is: ‘Marine ecological crises and social injustices are best solved by comprehensive and just conservation standards that recenter power with disproportionately impacted communities,’ and I’m happy to share the abstract.

France has officially ratified the High Seas Treaty (BBNJ), marking a significant advancement for marine biodiversity protection. On 5 November, Minister Jean-Noël Barrot presented the ratification bill to the Senate, where it received unanimous approval, following the National Assembly's support in May. Signed by France on 20 September 2023, the treaty builds on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (1982) and aims to protect 50% of the planet's surface and two-thirds of the ocean, advancing the global target of conserving at least 30% of the ocean by 2030, as set by the Convention on Biological Diversity. While we share the 30x30 goal with the High Seas Alliance, current MPA coverage remains far from 30%, as efforts are primarily focused on Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs). The BBNJ treaty creates a pathway to accelerate MPA establishment on the high seas, expanding conservation to a much larger scale. This milestone will bolster our work within EEZs and enhance our capacity to create MPAs at the scale needed to meet the 30x30 target, offering renewed hope for ocean conservation. The agreement will also play a key role in shaping future Deep-Sea Mining (DSM) negotiations, promoting sustainable resource use. With 60 ratifications required for the treaty's enactment, France and other EU nations are working to implement it by June 2025, ahead of the UN Ocean Conference in Nice.
