8 Vital Practices in Instructional Design and eLearning In my journey as an instructional designer, I've come to realize how challenging it is to create effective, user-centric eLearning experiences. I'm deeply grateful for the wisdom shared by legendary thought leaders in this field, whose insights have not only shaped my approach but continue to inspire me daily. As someone navigating this fast-evolving field, I understand the importance of learning from these experts, so I’ve linked my go-to resources in the comments in case you’d like to learn more from them too. Comment with other best practices and thought leaders (that/whom should also be on the list), along with resources and strategies. Let’s learn, collaborate, share, and grow together. 1 Be strategic. Figure out the problem before figuring out the targeted and realistic solution. Design Thinking can help. 2 Understand your learners’ jobs to be done through user research. Create a clear and efficient path to address their needs and abilities. 3 Encourage behavioral change. Guide them from “zero to hero” in their learning journey as quickly and easily as possible by designing learning using behavioral science principles and research-based best practices. Understand their preferences and pain points and remove their obstacles. 4 Harness key learning principles. Chunk information to avoid cognitive overload. Break content into smaller, manageable pieces and use visual supports. Manage SME relationships and simplify expert content. Avoid information dumps. 5 Be consistent. Inconsistent messaging and visuals detract from learning. Incorporate a cohesive style guide and visual design principles. 6 Make it fun, interactive, and effective. Incorporate evidence-based interactive elements like quizzes, drag-and-drop activities, games, and scenario-based learning to keep learners engaged. 7 Keep your processes simple and consistent. Follow best practices and streamline your workflow. 8 Evaluate it and improve it. Use the Kirkpatrick Model to evaluate training effectiveness. Conduct effective learning surveys. Reflecting on these best practices and resources, I've learned that humility and a willingness to learn from others are key to growth in instructional design. What challenges have you faced in your journey and what helped you solve them? I'd love to hear your experiences and insights in the comments! #eLearning #InstructionalDesign #LearningAndDevelopment

Here's something I think many instructional designers overlook: The best in our field aren't just experts in learning theories or tech tools—they are exceptional relationship builders. If you really think about it, instructional design is all about building relationships. You build them with subject matter experts, stakeholders, clients, and learners, to name just a few. To create truly impactful learning experiences, you need to collaborate closely with subject matter experts (SMEs). This means establishing trust and maintaining open lines of communication to tap into their deep knowledge. Engaging with stakeholders is another big part of the job. Understanding their vision, addressing their concerns, and ensuring alignment can transform good projects into great ones. It’s about speaking their language and turning their ideas into effective learning solutions. And let's not forget the learners. The best instructional designers dive deep into understanding the learner's environment and needs. They tailor experiences that resonate, making learning meaningful and impactful. Networking within the ID community is also vital. Building relationships with peers opens doors to new trends, tools, and techniques. Sharing challenges and solutions can lead to innovative ideas and strategies that enhance your practice. So, how do you strengthen these essential relationships? Start with empathy, maintain consistent communication, and always deliver on your promises. The connections you build will lay the foundation for successful projects and a thriving career. Are you leveraging the power of relationships in your instructional design work? ------------------------------ I'm Scott Winstead, a longtime eLearning pro who helps instructional designers sharpen their skills and land their dream jobs. 5 Things High-Performing Instructional Designers Never Do 🚫 As an Instructional Designer it’s not just about what you do it’s also about what you don’t do that can make or break your success. Here are 5 things that top instructional designers avoid at all costs: 1] Skipping the Analysis Phase Never skip the analysis. It forms the foundation of your learning experience design. Analysis allows you to truly understand your audience, build rapport with subject matter experts (SMEs), and create relevant content that hits the mark. 2] Using Source Content as It Is Source content is just a starting point whether it’s provided by an SME, pulled from your company library, or generated by AI. A great instructional designer reads it, analyzes it, and transforms it into something engaging that meets the learners’ needs. 3] Chasing Trends Blindly Trends can be exciting, but effective designers know that what works best is what meets the learners' needs. Whether it's a trending tool or a new design philosophy, only follow trends if they enhance your learners’ experience. Performance always comes before the hype. 4] Choosing the Wrong Tools With so many authoring tools available, it's easy to jump to conclusions. High-performing instructional designers choose their tools wisely, guided by the analysis phase, to ensure the chosen modality aligns with learners' needs and business goals. 5] Wasting SME Time SMEs are invaluable, but they’re also busy. Respect their time. Come prepared, learn what you can beforehand, and use their expertise strategically. Misusing their time leads to frustration and missed opportunities for collaboration. If you want to design effective, engaging courses, remember: it’s just as much about what you don’t do as what you do. Want more tips on becoming an effective instructional designer? As I begin my first big project as an instructional designer, I've been thinking a lot about scenarios. Crafting immersive scenarios in instructional design is more than just an educational trend; it's a transformative approach that empowers learners to apply knowledge in real-world contexts, engage deeply with content, and navigate complex decision-making processes. Immersive scenarios provide learners with safe, controlled environments where they can explore, make mistakes, and learn from them, thereby accelerating the learning process and enhancing retention. When designing immersive scenarios, a thoughtful instructional designer would ponder several critical questions to ensure the scenarios are effective, relevant, and engaging. Here are a few key considerations: 1. What are the learning objectives, and what real-world situations can mimic these learning objectives? The scenario should mirror realistic challenges that learners are likely to face, making the learning experience more relevant and memorable. 2. What branching decisions can be included? Good scenarios often have multiple paths, reflecting the complexity of real-life decisions. How can branching decisions enhance learning by showing the consequences of different choices? 3. How can the scenario be made inclusive and accessible to all learners? Consideration should be given to making scenarios accessible to people with disabilities and inclusive of diverse backgrounds to ensure all learners can benefit. What other considerations would you add to this list?? I'd love to hear them! Here's a great article that helped me gain additional insight! https://lnkd.in/gWhd3zAM
