Dear psychology majors who want to pursue a career in social media marketing: it's not too late. Let me share with you a summary of my journey: 💗 At 23, I earned my degree in Psychology from the University of Georgia, motivated by my desire to comprehend human behavior. Although I didn't take on internships during my college experience, I focused my energy on blogging and regularly producing content for my personal blog, which helped me refine my communication and digital skills. 💗 At 24, I embarked on my career in retail as a sales lead, and later transitioned into banking as a contact center representative. 💗 By 27, I returned to retail, accepting a lower salary to prioritize pursuing a second degree in Marketing Management and Social Media Marketing. During this time, I lacked a mentor for guidance, but I actively sought valuable resources, completed certification courses, and dedicated myself to building my personal brand and enhancing my social media presence. 💗 At 27, I launched my freelance social media management venture, Quinn Inspire. What began as a side project quickly evolved into a chance to attract clients, develop my expertise, and experience growth both personally and professionally. 💗 At 28, as I approached the finish line for my second degree, I started applying for social media positions and was ultimately hired by Warner Bros. Discovery as a Social Media Coordinator—a pivotal achievement that represented a significant advancement in my career. Why am I sharing this journey with you? To emphasize that no matter how unconventional or circuitous your path may appear, it can still lead you to your goals. Keep progressing, as the journey is just as important as the destination.

I always believed that to promote any product or service of an organisation it’s important to build your own personal brand. Many of us do great job or work on very interesting projects or even have unique prospective and you will get visible only if you start to share stories about it. In today’s digitally connected world of social media it’s a good practice to share your content/stories regularly to build your own personal brand.

Hi LinkedIn fam! Allow me to introduce myself—I'm Pearl, a brand strategist on a mission to discover the best PR opportunities for brands. Funny thing is, if you’d told me a year ago that I’d end up in PR, I’d have laughed. I’m a people person, sure—but I’d still pick dogs over humans any day! 🐾 2024 started with no clue of where I’d land. While graduating, I dabbled in internships across influencer marketing, business development, and even finance. But nothing truly felt right. I was earning, but the joy? Missing. That’s when I stumbled upon a quote: “You cannot discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.” One impulsive LinkedIn scroll later, I decided to dive into PR and sales. Big risk? Oh yes! I was still shy and gave up a comfy remote job with a great paycheck. But hey, your 20s are for exploring, right? Switching to PR felt like entering an arena of ambitious go-getters, where every day is a thrilling challenge. And guess what? It’s been the most exhilarating journey yet. So, here’s my takeaway: It’s okay to trade comfort for passion. It’s okay to take the leap. Who knows—you might just land in a career that makes your heart race in the best way possible! And if nothing else, you’ll have a story worth sharing on LinkedIn.

I am living proof that you don't need a fancy uni degree to break into the marketing industry 🎓❌ For those who don’t know me, I thought I would introduce myself and share my journey leading up to where I am today 👋🏼 Growing up I always struggled with choosing what career path to go down. While my friends pursued degrees in nursing or teaching, I felt stuck and directionless. Despite the uncertainty, I found myself drawn to the social media landscape. In my teenage years, I hustled to create YouTube intros and banners for the current 'IT girls', tapping into my passion for social media. A new season of Love Island came out? You bet I’d be scoping who was gonna need some new assets for killer socials. I was tapping into my interest in social media without realising it could be a career. While working in retail, I started to reach out to a few places with a bare-looking resume and a ✨ passionate ✨ cover letter. A few rejections later I landed a full-time role as a Social Media Assistant agency-side. I was stoked! I didn’t know a whole lot, I simply loved social media and had a strong drive to learn, grow, and succeed. It was an amazing role and I am so grateful for the incredible opportunities it brought me. Fast-forward to today I’m working as a Digital Marketing Co-ordinator less than two years into my marketing career (if you’re not counting the hustle days at 16 years old). How did I get here? I had passion and drive. Just because your path doesn’t start at university, doesn’t mean you can’t succeed and grow as a marketing professional. Drive and passion will always get you places. If you are an aspiring marketing professional looking for tips, please reach out I would love to connect ✨ #socialemediamarketing #careeradvice #careerdevelopment

I started my personal brand for attention (but not in the way you're thinking) A bit over a month ago, I started posting here. My goal was to get attention. Not for sales. Not for vanity. For a job. I've been on the job hunt for a minute. And, let me paint you a picture of what that looks like: ↳ 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫-𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬; You go through multiple rounds. You're asked for: - 10+ years of experience; - Ex-rays of your pinky toes; - A letter of recommendation from your 1st-grade teacher. Okay, this doesn't happen. (yet) You get the feeling, though. ↳ 27 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞 1; Don’t know about other industries... But in marketing, this is a common practice. ↳ 𝐆𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠; Not cute. Don't recommend. It is lowkey disheartening. Now, this post is NOT a sob story. Most of us go through this. I was even prepared for it. Especially, because I didn't graduate in marketing. So, after uni, I had 2 options: 1. Look for a job in my field, and feel unhappy. 2. Create my own experience, and try to make it work. Spoiler alert- I choose the latest. I landed a voluntary internship in digital communications... That didn't seem enough. So I needed something else... Something that made me stand out... Something that showed I was capable... That "something" was building my personal brand. So far, it has allowed me to: → Network; → Transform in Public; → Consistently upskill; → Showcase my work and personality; → Connect with industry peers and learn from them; Don't get me wrong, I might not get an offer directly from posting on LinkedIn… But it IS making me more employable! P.S. Why did you start a personal brand?

Lately I have been noticing more and more people creating their personal brand on LinkedIn and it got me thinking... 💭 I used to focus on connecting with essential network members such as my fellow marketers, and just learning from them, as I thought this platform is all about learning from much more experienced people and that I don't have enough knowledge to be posting on LinkedIn 🧠. But now, I am shifting my approach. I have came to a realisation that by building my personal brand, and telling people my story of being a highly motivated individual, is the direction towards success✨. I can attract the right people to me, build better and stronger connections and maybe even influence others📱. Here in an insightful guide on how to work on your personal branding. ⬇️
I secured a grad job because of my personal brand. Here's how you can do the same in 5 steps: 1. Define your why 2. Pick 3 brand pillars 3. Decide who you're speaking to 4. Find your version of consistency 5. Network Don't leave university feeling unprepared for the job market. Build a personal brand and have recruiters coming to you. I will graduate from UW-Madison in the coming days, and I want to express my sincere gratitude for gaining professional knowledge and rich experience in Madison, which will play an important role in my career planning. My major is strategic communication in the School of Journalism & Mass Communication, with a certificate in Digital Media Analytics. During my undergraduate studies, I developed a concrete foundation in strategic communication as well as other areas, including brand management, advertising, marketing management, and digital social media. I developed some quantitative skills as well in order to adapt to a marketing field that has transcended traditional methods to technological and data-driven approaches. My internship experiences, particularly at Dentsu X China, have solidified my interest in understanding and engaging audiences profoundly. My job was to analyze trends and social changes, generate consumer preferences and activities, and create appropriate marketing strategies or appropriate media channels based on past advertisements. The reason why I like this job is because when I see the marketing campaigns that I have participated in appearing in various media channels, I feel a sense of fulfillment in delivering my ideas to the world. One of my favorite case is to do a performance review for Coach, which is to look at what trends are going to happen in the luxury industry in 2023, and then what Coach lacks in the first half of the year and what it can do in the future. This case also mainly uses insight stack to find reports, and one of the campaigns we did was to help Coach change the outdated and old-fashioned image in Gen Z's eyes and to promote glossy products to the subtle Chinese people. We conducted a trend analysis through our insight stack and survey on social media for coach that revealed Chinese Gen Z's growing confidence and desire for self-expression, contrary to the brand's concerns of cultural reserve. The analysis showed a significant shift; Chinese Gen Z showed passion, confidence, and creativity, particularly in expressing their identities and values, especially local pride. This insight helped craft a culturally nuanced marketing message to highlight the confidence the shiny handbags carry that resonated with this demographic At the beginning of my internship, my mentor told me that I needed to know more about my clients' brands and audiences than my clients. This sentence affected me so much that I have been eager to cultivate more analytics capabilities to help me produce the right message to the right audience. Now that I'm graduating and I'm excited to start a new chapter in my life, I will use this summer to enrich my quantitative skills to make sure that I can stand out from the candidates.

Ever since I first thought about my career, I knew marketing was where I wanted to be. I started out as an intern over four years ago, and since then, I’ve witnessed a huge shift in how marketing works. The journey has taught me so much along the way. Here’s what I’ve learned… It’s not as glamorous as you might think, there are plenty of repetitive tasks, and you won’t always be part of those flashy campaigns. You’ll spend hours glued to screens, whether it’s your phone or laptop. Prioritize taking breaks to avoid burnout. Everyone will have an opinion on your work. Focus on understanding your audience and let the data speak for itself. Meeting client expectations can be incredibly exhausting. Everyone wants perfect work, and trying to deliver that can often feel overwhelming. Even friends and family may assume your job is easy. Spoiler: it’s more challenging than it looks! #Marketingisnotfun #marketer #SMM

Funny how something I wanted to avoid became a stepping stone 😌 If you had told me at the beginning of the year that I’d be doing the job I’m doing now, I would’ve laughed and argued. Or that I would have learned about sales, marketing, being a Virtual Assistant (VA), and mastering social media? I’d have thought, “impossible”! But here I am…. Like every other year, I started with a list of resolutions I was determined to achieve. As a first-class graduate in Business Administration, I believed my career should reflect the “first-class” label. Working as a social media intern during my NYSC felt beneath me. I wanted something I could proudly showcase—something I could point to and say, “this is what my degree earned me”. So, I avoided roles in social media marketing, even though that was where my skills and experience shone the brightest. I sent out my CV, landed interviews, and confidently tackled aptitude tests. But rejection after rejection taught me one thing: sometimes, the path we want isn’t the one we’re ready for. Eventually, I leaned into my strengths and took up a role as a social media manager. Once I embraced the role, I decided to dig deeper. I discovered what it means to be a standout VA and realized how those skills complement social media management. Then, I took it a step further by learning about sales; how to prospect, generate leads, and strategically apply those skills to my role. Now, I’m not just a social media manager; I’m a social media strategist leveraging sales techniques to create meaningful results. This journey has taught me that the path to success isn’t always the one you meticulously plan—it’s the one you’re willing to walk, step by step. 🚀 What about you? Is there something you’re doing now that you never imagined at the start of the year? I’d love to hear your story; let’s learn from each other! 🤝 #CareerJourney #SocialMediaManager #VirtualAssistant #SalesStrategies #PersonalDevelopment #LinkedInCommunity #CareerPivot #LearningAndGrowing
