I mean this in the most disrespectful way possible: Don’t contact me without a budget. I can’t pay bills off exposure. I can’t pay workers off volunteer work for corporations. I can’t put sushi in my tummy off empty promises and late payments. When you craft that email asking for free labor, I want you to proofread it twice and then hit that delete draft button. K. Thanks. #HireBlackWomen #influencer #contentcreator #DEI #socialmedia
Coming from a professional Procurement perspective, there is a difference between having a budget and asking for and expecting FREE services, products etc. A customer, having some amount of money or budget to cover the initiative (product or service) is an expectation of any professional transaction. Expectation of FREE is unrealistic and not appropriate. Asking me “do you have a budget” is fair. Asking me what my budget is, is not. As a Buyer I may be getting quotes because I legitimately may not know what size a budget I need and so I’m asking for quotes to determine my company can afford the product or service or I’m asking so I can go get budget approval. Telling you what my budget is, is different. I’m not going to tell you my budget because, first it’s none of your business and second, if I do, invariably, that’s exactly what the product or service will cost me, even if it’s worth or costs less. You now know what I’m willing or can afford to pay. Sorry, no, that’s not how negotiation works. Free or grinding you down to a loss is wrong and not professional. Expecting fair market pricing should be the goal of both Buyers and Sellers.
"We wanted to see what you thought was fair." ie, we have a budget, but we're hoping you quote us something way below budget so we can lowball you.
I'm not even coming to the call if they don't disclose their budget. It's now a mandatory question on my lead magnet form. Enough is enough.
I actually thought this was quite respectful. 😂 But big facts, though. I had someone whom I've known for years mention a project he might want my help with and then said 'I don't really have a budget.' I responded 'Then I won't really have the time.' Stop misinterpreting the 'free' in 'freelance.'
LISTEN....enough is enough with all of that.
I’m working on getting to this point!!

1wI've been playing this game for over 20 years and may have had 2 emails in 200,000 with a set budget on first contact. I've spent more time on the phone with interns than I care to remember having hours long conversations explaining every possible detail until tears rolled down my cheeks from exhaustion. Most of those jobs never happened. No money, no compensation, until one day a few years down the road I get a call from one of those interns, who was now in a decision making position. Then another call from another former intern. Pretty soon, I had more work than I could handle. Play the long game, if you really want to make a name for yourself.
